India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta on Monday, as he started his three-country visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. The visit is focused on deepening the Indo-Pacific cooperation under the Act East Policy, strengthening the MAHASAGAR Vision and cooperation across Indo-Pacific. The Prime Minister’s aircraft was met by the Indonesian Air Force fighter planes as it flew into the country’s airspace and was greeted personally by the Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the airport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Jakarta, Indonesia, to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with President Prabowo Subianto, focusing on maritime security, trade, and Indo-Pacific cooperation as the first leg of a three-country tour.

India-Indonesia Partnership Takes Centre Stage

On his visit, PM Modi will meet President Prabowo Subianto for bilateral discussions and discuss the development of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Indonesia, which was elevated in his 2018 visit. It is expected that the discussions will be along the lines of maritime security, defence cooperation, trade, connectivity, energy and digital cooperation.

PM Modi also shared a post on X after arriving in Jakarta, saying, “Landed in Jakarta. I’m touched by President Prabowo Subianto’s gesture of welcoming me at the airport. In 2018 we elevated our relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has benefitted our people. During this visit, President Prabowo Subianto and I will hold discussions aimed at adding even more momentum to this partnership across diverse sectors.”

Indonesia is the largest trading partner of India in ASEAN and is strategic because it is located on the Malacca Strait, which is one of the busiest shipping channels in the world.

Visit Reinforces Act East Policy And MAHASAGAR Vision

Prior to his trip to the three countries, the Prime Minister said that the engagements in Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand would help advance the “Act East Policy”, the MAHASAGAR Vision and India’s commitment towards a “free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific”.

Referring to India-Indonesia ties, PM Modi said, “India and Indonesia elevated bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during my first visit to Indonesia in 2018.” He also noted that this is his first bilateral visit to Indonesia since the partnership was upgraded and comes after President Prabowo’s visit to India as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations in January 2025.

The Prime Minister further said, “India and Indonesia share strong civilisational and people-to-people ties, and my visit will further deepen all aspects of our multifaceted partnership.”

Diaspora Interaction And Cultural Engagement

Apart from the official meetings, PM Modi will also meet with the Indian community in Indonesia. He will also visit the historic Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta with President Prabowo Subianto, showcasing the cultural and civilisational ties between the two countries.

Prambanan Temple, which is the largest of Hindu temples in Indonesia, is one of the most significant cultural sites in Indonesia and is located 17 kilometres northeast of Yogyakarta.

Indonesia Visit Marks First Leg Of Three-Nation Tour

PM Modi’s visit to Indonesia is the first on the list in his diplomatic tour, which is followed by Australia and New Zealand. The three-nation outreach is expected to not only strengthen India’s strategic ties, but also deepen the cooperation in the areas of trade, security, regional connectivity and economic development in the Indo-Pacific.
