Changing careers is never easy, especially after spending nearly two decades in a profession. For most people, years of experience and financial stability make the idea of starting over almost unthinkable. But Janhavi Ajit Rao chose a different path.

After building a successful career in technology, she left the industry to study medicine at the age of 40. Years later, she is now practising as a doctor in the United States. Her unusual career shift has recently gone viral on social media, inspiring many who believe it is never too late to follow a new calling.

After nearly two decades in technology, Janhavi Ajit Rao changed careers at age 40 to study and practice medicine in the United States, inspired by her own health diagnosis and the care she received.

A Career Built in Technology

Janhavi was born in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, and later moved to the United States for higher education. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics from the University of California, San Diego, followed by a Master’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

She went on to work as a software engineer with several technology companies in the US before returning to India in 2002 with her husband, who is also an engineer.

After settling in Bengaluru, she continued working in the technology sector and eventually started her own company in the defence electronics industry. By then, she had spent nearly 18 years building a career in engineering.

The Diagnosis That Changed Her Perspective

Life took an unexpected turn in 2003 when Janhavi was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints.

Her treatment became more than a medical journey. It also changed the way she looked at her future.

Spending time with doctors and seeing the difference they made in patients’ lives left a deep impression on her. Their compassion, commitment and ability to improve lives gradually inspired her to consider a profession she had never imagined for herself.

That experience eventually led her to make one of the biggest decisions of her life.

Starting Medical School at 40

In 2013, Janhavi enrolled for MBBS at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College in Bengaluru. She was 40.

Returning to college after nearly two decades was anything but easy. She found herself back in classrooms, studying anatomy, physiology and medicine alongside students almost half her age.

The transition demanded long hours of study, practical training and examinations, all while beginning an entirely new career from scratch.

But she stayed the course.

After years of hard work, she completed her MBBS, proving that changing direction later in life is difficult, but far from impossible.

Now Practising Medicine in the US

Janhavi’s story recently reached a wider audience after it was shared on X by a user named Vikas.

According to the post, she is now pursuing her MD while working as a primary care physician in the United States, where she treats patients and continues her medical training.

Her journey has drawn widespread appreciation online, with many describing it as a reminder that age does not have to define a person’s ambitions.

One social media user wrote, “You are never too old to learn something new, and it is never too late to begin.”

Janhavi Rao’s story is less about changing professions and more about having the courage to begin again. After nearly two decades in engineering, she chose a completely different path and built a second career in medicine-showing that sometimes the biggest turning points in life come when people are willing to start over.
