Indian ODI captain Shubman Gill has given a major hint for Virat Kohli’s future for 2027 World Cup. A day before opening ODI against England, Shubman Gill revealed that he and Virat Kohli discussed about India’s playing XI in the first match. He also said they discussed about the future World Cup 2027 that is supposed to happen in South Africa.
Shubman Gill stated he discussed team combinations and strategies for the 2027 ODI World Cup with Virat Kohli, affirming Kohli’s central role in the squad alongside Rohit Sharma due to their valuable experience.
Gill Opens Up On World Cup Planning With Kohli
While addressing the speculation about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future and their participation in ODI World Cup, Shubman Gill said that Virat Kohli is central part of India’s squad of ODI World Cup. He also said that they both sat and discussed about the squad they want for 2027 World Cup.
While talking about their discussion, Shubman Gill said, “In fact, just the day before yesterday, I was discussing our plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup with him. We talked about team combinations, which players could be part of the squad, which players could be crucial for us even if they aren’t part of the squad right now, and where each player would fit best within the team setup.”
With this Gill confirmed that not just Virat Kohli will play the World Cup 2027 but also a part of leadership and their strategies for the upcoming tournament. Interestingly, a few days back in one of his interview, Virat Kohli said that he will not like to play in the team where he had to continuously prove his worth.
Gill Backs Kohli And Rohit As Team’s Pillars
While addressing age factor, Shubman Gill also confirmed that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are integral part of the ODI squad and they are part of it for their experience and consistency.
“Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been the backbone of the Indian batting lineup for the past decade, and both remain an integral part of the team. The experience and skill they bring to the team are obviously very valuable. We have seen what they have done over the past decade in different conditions,” said Shubman Gill.
Interestingly, after winning the T20 World 2026, Team India’s performance has raised several questions, the team face defeated from Ireland and England in their tours. This is the first time when team India has lost series continuously. Now the focus is on ODI team which are in England to play three ODI series where the experience players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have returned to squads.
