After alleging a “lack of transparency”, Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk, has asked Safdarjung Hospital to discharge her husband immediately.
In a post on X, she expressed doubts after the hospital claimed that his potassium level is reduced to 2.9. She said, “@Wangchuk66’s potassium level is 2.9 whereas just yesterday it was 4.3. They are not allowing me to either get a second opinion by taking him to another lab not are they giving me his blood sample in my presence which i can get tested elsewhere.
Following activist Sonam Wangchuk’s hospitalization during a hunger strike, his wife Gitanjali J Angmo alleges a lack of transparency at Safdarjung Hospital regarding his potassium levels and demands immediate discharge.
I have been waiting since 3 hours but they haven’t obliged us yet. This lack of transparency is making us suspicious and we have asked to be discharged immediately so that we can go to a hospital that we are comfortable with. We are awaiting their response for the last 2 hours.”
Sonam Wangchuk was taken to the hospital by the Delhi Police early in the morning.
The hospital has said that he is facing dehydration, low potassium and rising ketone levels, which may pose a risk to kidney function and other metabolic complications, ANI reported. Sources told the news agency that the family is being counselled to allow the treatment.

The latest health bulletin said, “At the time of admission, he was conscious with a stable pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. Signs of dehydration were seen. Blood gas analysis revealed compensated acidosis with decreased serum potassium and blood sugar of 78 mg/dl. Repeat Serum Potassium was similar. Urinary ketones were 1+ at the time of admission, which increased to 3+ by 1:00 pm.”
“Although intravenous fluids were advised, the patient has refused all intravenous fluids, oral rehydration fluid or any other medication. He is being continuously monitored and counselled for treatment in the best interest of his health,” it added.

Nitin Dighe, a member of the doctors’ team at Jantar Mantar, said that they were not informed about the activist being taken to the hospital. He has been monitoring his health for the last 20 days as he sat in Jantar Mantar.
Dighe told ANI: “None of our doctors has been allowed to meet him because an official from the Ministry of Home Affairs is present there. We were made to wait and were not permitted to meet our patient. His wife was allowed to meet him and informed us that his potassium level is low. However, when we conducted tests yesterday around 3 p.m., his potassium level was normal. We have not been provided with the medical report.
The hospital doctor has prescribed potassium, and I am taking the medicine there. This medication could have been administered at Jantar Mantar itself, so there was no need to hospitalise him. He is otherwise healthy, and he will walk to Parliament himself the day after tomorrow.”
Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in national-level examinations, including the NEET paper leak controversy.
