From a Courtroom Remark to a Nationwide Youth Movement- A timeline

CJP Protest Timeline
CJP Protest Timeline

May 15, 2026 – The ‘Cockroach’ Remark:

During a Supreme Court hearing on fraudulent law degrees, Chief Justice Surya Kant made observations criticizing individuals who allegedly exploit the system through fake qualifications. He compared such people to “cockroaches” and described them as “parasites on society.”

Social media misinterpretations of CJI Surya Kant’s May 15, 2026 remark comparing fake degree holders to cockroaches sparked the satirical Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) youth movement, culminating in nationwide protests and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation on July 25, 2026.

Although the observations were made in the context of fake degree holders, clips and excerpts circulated widely on social media, where many interpreted the remarks as referring to unemployed youth.

The comment quickly became one of the most debated judicial observations of the year.

May 16, 2026 – CJI Clarifies

Within 24 hours, Chief Justice Surya Kant clarified that his remarks had been taken out of context. He said his criticism was directed solely at people entering noble professions through fake degrees-not at India’s unemployed youth, whom he described as the “pillars of a developed India.”

Birth of CJP:

The clarification failed to stem public anger.

Activist Abhijeet Dipke launched the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) as a satirical online movement, reclaiming the word cockroach as a symbol of resilience against what supporters described as an insensitive and unresponsive system.

CJP’s Instagram account amassed millions of followers within days.

Dipke, who had been studying in the United States, announced that he was cutting short his stay and returning to India. After landing, he received expedited immigration clearance and headed directly from the airport to Jantar Mantar, where students had already begun gathering.

The movement quickly spread across social media.

Late May 2026 – A Meme Becomes a Mass Movement:

What began as satire soon transformed into one of India’s fastest-growing youth movements online.

Lakhs adopted cockroach-themed profile pictures.
“We Are the Cockroaches” trended across social media.
Students, job seekers and young professionals began sharing stories of unemployment, examination paper leaks and failed recruitment drives.

June 6-10, 2026 – Jantar Mantar Becomes Protest Headquarters:

Thousands of students converged at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

CJP announced nationwide protests and demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

June 21 – July 7, 2026 – Digital Crackdown:

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) ordered the blocking of CJP’s official X account under Section 69A.

Within hours, supporters launched an alternative account titled “Cockroach Is Back,” which rapidly gained followers. CJP challenged the blocking before the Delhi High Court. On July 7, the Court ordered restoration of the account, marking a significant legal victory for the movement.

June 28, 2026 – Sonam Wangchuk Joins the Protest:

Education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk arrived at Jantar Mantar in solidarity with protesting students and began an indefinite hunger strike.

After 26 days on hunger strike, he was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18 following deterioration in his health. Ministers Nadda and Jitendra Singh met him to urge him to stop hunger strike

July 20, 2026 – ‘Chalo Sansad’ March

CJP called for a “Chalo Sansad” (march to parmialent) march.

Tens of thousands of students assembled in Delhi before being stopped by police near Parliament.

The confrontation led to, Police use brutal of force against peaceful protesters

Images of the crackdown spreading rapidly across social media, triggering widespread public anger

July 22, 2026 – CJI’s Remarks on Protest Videos:

Lawyers urgently mentioned petitions before the Supreme Court seeking intervention over alleged police excesses against protesters.

Referring to video clips presented during the mentioning, Chief Justice Surya Kant observed:
“We are not interested in videos… We don’t have time to watch them… Don’t waste your time and my time.” The remarks triggered another wave of criticism online, with many alleging judicial insensitivity toward student protesters.

July 23, 2026 – PM Modi Reaches Out via Instagram:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted his first Instagram video late at night addressing concerns over examination paper leaks and the anxieties of students and parents and assures action

A second video followed the next day.

The first reel attracted nearly one million new followers to his Instagram account overnight.

The outreach, however, failed to reduce the momentum of the protests, with online discussions continuing to focus on examination reforms and ministerial accountability.

July 24, 2026 – CJI Issues a Second Clarification:

Addressing the controversy during a public event, Chief Justice Surya Kant said his remarks had once again been misunderstood.

He reiterated that the Supreme Court remained open to every citizen seeking justice and emphasized that cases should be brought through proper legal procedures rather than oral mentionings. The clarification sought to defuse criticism over his remarks on protest videos.

July 23, 24, 2026 – Government Opens Talks:

Following days of nationwide protests and mounting political pressure, the Union government opened negotiations with CJP representatives. Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh met CJP leaders twice on July 23 and 24. Third round of discussion taken place today

July 25, 2026 – Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns:

Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns as education minister

The resignation marked the movement’s biggest political victory, transforming what had begun as outrage over a courtroom remark into a nationwide youth campaign centred on employment, examination integrity, educational reform and government accountability.
