In an unexpected twist, Tamil Nadu’s Class 12 aspirants will have to press pause on their celebration plans. The state’s much-anticipated higher secondary exam results will not be released on May 8 as reported earlier, marking a sudden about-turn from earlier scheduling.

Tamil Nadu’s Class 12 results, initially scheduled for May 8, are delayed as the Directorate of Government Examinations (TNDGE) continues processing for the 9,09,002 candidates; a new announcement date is pending.
Just days ago, officials had brought the date forward from May 9 to May 8, sparking a flurry of anxious anticipation across the state. Now, the Directorate of Government Examinations (TNDGE) has told an English daily that the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary (Plus Two) results are still being processed.
The new date of results be announced in due course, leaving nearly a million students and their families in limbo.
This year’s examination cycle was a massive logistical undertaking. A total of 9,09,002 candidates sat for the papers, including 8,82,806 students from 12,467 schools, alongside 25,801 private candidates and even 395 from prisons. The Education Department conducted it in 4,219 exam centres statewide, with special arrangements for 12,292 differently-abled students, who received scribes and tailored support.
Over 45,000 teachers were roped in for invigilation and supervision, while more than 4,800 flying squads patrolled centres to stamp out malpractice.
For context, Tamil Nadu’s recent track record has been one of steady improvement. In 2023, the overall pass rate stood at 91.39%, with girls outstripping boys 95.2% to 93.3%. Perambalur led the districts at 95.40%. In 2024, the pass percentage inched up to 91.55%, with girls again outshining boys (94.53% vs 88.58%), and Ariyalur claiming the top district spot.
Last year’s exams saw 9,13,036 students appear, with 8,17,261 clearing. Girls once more stole the show with a 95.88% pass rate against boys’ 91.74%, a notable 4.14-point gap. Sivagangai topped the district rankings at 98.31%, followed by Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari, and Trichy.
For now, though, the wait continues-and Tamil Nadu’s student community holds its breath.
