Tamil Nadu Class 12 2026 Results: The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE) on Friday announced the results of the Higher Secondary Second Year (Class 12) examinations, with the state recording an impressive overall pass percentage of 95.20 per cent. The results mark a marginal improvement over last year’s 95.03 per cent, continuing the steady upward trend in academic performance across the state.

A total of 7,91,654 students appeared for the examinations conducted between March 2 and March 26, 2026. Of them, 7,53,694 students cleared the exams successfully. The results were released on May 8.

Tamil Nadu DGE announced Class 12 results on May 8 for 7,91,654 students, achieving an overall pass rate of 95.20%, with girls (97%) outperforming boys (93.19%).

As in previous years, girls outperformed boys by a significant margin. While 97 per cent of girls passed the examination, the pass percentage among boys stood at 93.19 per cent. Female students outscored boys by 3.81 percentage points.

Out of the 4,18,724 girls who appeared, 4,06,167 passed. Among boys, 3,47,527 students cleared the examination out of 3,72,930 candidates.

Pass Percentage Continues Upward Trend

Tamil Nadu has consistently improved its Class 12 performance over the past five years. In 2022, the state pass percentage stood at 93.76 per cent, which gradually rose to 94.03 per cent in 2023, 94.56 per cent in 2024, 95.03 per cent in 2025, and now 95.20 per cent in 2026.

The number of absentees this year stood at 7,874.

Schools Shine With Strong Results

Out of the 7,536 higher secondary schools in the state, as many as 2,639 schools recorded a 100 per cent pass rate. Another 5,170 schools achieved pass percentages above 95 per cent.

Government schools too posted encouraging performances. A total of 489 government schools secured a perfect 100 per cent result, while 1,572 government schools crossed the 95 per cent mark.

Private schools once again emerged as the top-performing category with an exceptional 98.72 per cent pass rate.

Science Stream Leads Performance

Among the major streams, Science students recorded the highest success rate with 96.90 per cent passing the examination. Commerce followed with 92.67 per cent, while Arts and Vocational streams registered 85.19 per cent and 85.97 per cent respectively.

Girls outperformed boys across all streams, with particularly notable gaps in Commerce and Arts subjects.

Computer Science Dominates Subject Scores

Computer Science emerged as one of the best-performing subjects with a remarkable 99.84 per cent pass percentage. Biology also witnessed stellar performance at 99.49 per cent, while Mathematics recorded 99.12 per cent.

Several vocational and niche subjects also posted near-perfect outcomes. Nutrition and Dietetics, Communicative English, Basic Civil Engineering and Textile Technology achieved a 100 per cent pass percentage.

Over 16,000 Students Score Centums

This year, 16,024 students secured at least one centum (100/100) in different subjects. Among them, 1,695 students were from government schools, underlining the improving academic standards in the public education system.

Computer Science saw the highest number of centums with a staggering 6,945 students scoring full marks. Accountancy followed with 1,946 centums, while Computer Applications recorded 2,099 perfect scores.

Tamil and English saw comparatively fewer centums, with 83 students scoring full marks in Tamil and just 21 in English.

Erode Tops District Rankings

Erode district emerged as the top-performing district in Tamil Nadu with an overall pass percentage of 98.87 per cent. Sivagangai secured the second spot with 98.05 per cent, followed by Kanyakumari at 97.63 per cent.

Among metropolitan regions, Chennai recorded a pass percentage of 95.43 per cent.

At the lower end of the table, Villupuram recorded 85.92 per cent, Ranipet 88.20 per cent and Vellore 90.73 per cent.

Special Category Candidates

Candidates with disabilities recorded a pass percentage of 76.92 per cent, with 6,811 students passing out of 8,855 candidates who appeared.

Prison inmates performed remarkably well, registering a pass percentage of 95.20 per cent, almost matching the state average.

Private candidates, however, recorded comparatively lower success rates. Among Higher Secondary second-year private candidates, only 24.18 per cent passed, while first-year private candidates recorded a pass percentage of 41.53 per cent.

Government Schools Show Improvement

Government school students collectively achieved a pass percentage of 92.16 per cent. Among various government departments, Tribal Welfare schools performed exceptionally well with a 97.33 per cent pass rate, while Social Defence schools recorded 96.92 per cent.

The continued rise in overall performance, coupled with strong results from government schools and rural districts, reflects Tamil Nadu’s sustained focus on school education and academic outcomes.

With girls continuing to dominate the results and science subjects maintaining exceptionally high pass rates, the 2026 Class 12 results have once again reinforced the state’s reputation as one of India’s strongest performers in public education.
