Ramya Sudha Vinukonda is a Biology teacher at ZPHS Rangampeta, Andhra Pradesh, whose 13 year teaching journey has been shaped by a strong belief that education can transform not only academic performance, but also the lives and confidence of students. Through activity based learning, experimental teaching, research, innovation and personal care, she has created a classroom environment where students are encouraged to explore, participate and discover their abilities.
What makes Ramya Sudha’s approach distinctive is the way she combines the role of a teacher with that of a mentor and caregiver. Soon after entering the teaching profession, she realised that many students needed someone who could understand them beyond their textbooks and examinations. She began treating her students like her own children, and they affectionately started calling her “Mom”. Her patient and personal approach helped students who were irregular, uninterested in studies or struggling with behavioural issues gradually develop greater confidence and discipline. Some of those students have since established themselves successfully in their careers.
Her commitment to education is reflected in the innovative work she has undertaken during 13 years of service. She has developed 20 innovative ideas and received a patent award, while students under her guidance have achieved success in two international (Sakura Science Expo, Japan, Science Castle Asia, Malaysia), five national, six state and eleven district level science project competitions. Her teaching methodology focuses on giving students hands on experience, making Biology more practical, engaging and easier to understand.
Her work also extends beyond the physical classroom. During the COVID 19 pandemic, Ramya Sudha conducted free online classes for government school students when regular education was disrupted. She continues to provide free online coaching for competitive examinations, including the National Science Olympiad. Students guided by her have also secured gold medals in national level Olympiads, demonstrating the impact of accessible academic support.
Ramya Sudha’s interest in education is closely connected with research and continuous professional development. She has participated in more than 10 national and international workshops, seminars and training programmes and has submitted more than 10 research papers at national and international levels. Her research has received Best Research Paper Awards and has been published in national and international research journals. She has also contributed Biology related educational content to publications including Arihant, Darshan and Anuganga.
Her academic contribution has further taken the form of authorship. She is the author of The Essence of Biology, a book for which she received the International Best Author Award in Vietnam. Her journey demonstrates how a teacher can expand beyond conventional classroom responsibilities and contribute to education through research, writing, innovation and knowledge sharing.
For Ramya Sudha, education is also closely connected with social responsibility. She contributes food, books and financial assistance to children with special needs and orphaned children. As a National Green Corps teacher, she conducts environmental awareness programmes and promotes practical eco friendly initiatives. Her activities include making banana sanitary napkins, ragi tea cups, clay water bottles, bird nests and eco friendly colours for Holi, encouraging students to understand sustainability through action.
Her contribution has earned her more than 15 awards from various organisations. These include the National Best Science Teacher Award from CV Raman Science Society at Science Centre, Ahmedabad, the National Best Teacher Award from Manam Foundation, Hyderabad, and the District Best Teacher Award from the Department of School Education, East Godavari.
Born on 21 July 1988 in Rajahmundry, East Godavari district, Ramya Sudha comes from a family with a strong educational background. Her father, Sri Vishwam, is a former principal of his own college, while her mother, Smt. Suneetha, is a retired government school headmaster. A class topper from KG to PG, she secured her government teaching position through DSC in 2012 on her first attempt at the age of 24. Her husband, Raja Akasapu, is also a government school teacher, while their daughter Anvitha Riona is studying in Class 4.
At the heart of Ramya Sudha’s journey is a simple philosophy: do not compare yourself with others. She encourages students to recognise their individual abilities, compete with their own previous achievements, break their personal records and set new goals. Her message also extends beyond education, urging people to respect nature and become responsible citizens.
Through teaching, innovation, research, social service and environmental action, Ramya Sudha continues to demonstrate that the influence of a teacher can reach far beyond the classroom. Her journey is a reminder that when education is delivered with knowledge, patience and genuine care, it has the power to change the direction of young lives.
