Health authorities in the United States have confirmed that one American passenger evacuated from a hantavirus-affected cruise ship has tested mildly positive for the virus.

Following a hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, one American passenger evacuated from the Canary Islands tested mildly positive, and 17 US citizens are being repatriated to Nebraska for medical observation and treatment.

The development comes as 17 US citizens are being repatriated after a deadly outbreak linked to the cruise vessel MV Hondius.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, one passenger is currently showing mild symptoms, while another tested mildly positive for the Andes virus, a dangerous strain of hantavirus found mainly in South America.

The passengers are now being transported under strict medical precautions.

Passengers Being Transported In Biocontainment Units

US officials said the infected passengers are travelling inside specialised biocontainment units on the aircraft “out of an abundance of caution.” The repatriated Americans were evacuated from Spain’s Canary Islands, where the cruise ship had recently stopped during its journey.

After reaching the United States, the passengers will be taken to a specialised medical facility in the rural state of Nebraska for further observation and treatment.
Officials added that the passenger showing mild symptoms will be shifted to a separate medical centre for additional care.

The health department said that upon arrival, each passenger will undergo medical evaluation and receive treatment based on their condition.

What Happened On The MV Hondius?

The outbreak was linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship, where several passengers reportedly fell ill during the voyage. According to reports, at least three passengers have died so far due to the disease, while several others became sick.

The situation raised serious concern among health authorities because hantavirus infections are considered rare but potentially dangerous.

Officials are now closely monitoring all passengers and crew members who may have been exposed to the virus.

What Is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is a rare viral infection that usually spreads through contact with infected rodents, especially through their urine, droppings or saliva.

People can become infected by breathing in contaminated particles from rodent waste.
The virus can cause severe respiratory illness and other serious health complications in some cases.

Different strains of hantavirus exist in different parts of the world. The Andes virus, which was mentioned in the latest case, is known to circulate mainly in parts of South America.

Symptoms Of Hantavirus Infection

Health experts say hantavirus symptoms can initially appear similar to common viral infections.

Early symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

In severe cases, the infection can affect the lungs and make breathing difficult.
Doctors often monitor patients carefully because the illness can worsen rapidly in some individuals.

Why Authorities Are Taking Extra Precautions

Although hantavirus infections are rare, authorities are taking strict precautions because of the seriousness of the outbreak aboard the cruise ship. Transporting passengers in biocontainment units helps reduce the risk of possible spread during travel.
US health officials have not yet confirmed whether additional passengers tested positive, but monitoring and testing are continuing.

The incident has once again raised concerns about infectious disease management on international cruise ships, where passengers remain in close contact for long periods.

Cruise Ship Outbreak Draws Global Attention

The outbreak aboard the MV Hondius has attracted global attention because of the rare nature of the virus and the deaths already linked to the incident.

Health agencies in multiple countries are now closely watching the situation while investigations continue into how the infection spread among passengers.

Officials have urged the public not to panic but to remain aware of symptoms and follow medical guidance if exposure is suspected. The condition of the affected passengers is currently being monitored by medical teams in the United States.
