Bahujan Samaj Party’s lone MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Uma Shankar Singh, representing Rasra constituency in Ballia and aged 55, passed away on Wednesday evening following treatment for a brain tumour.
Who Was Uma Shankar Singh?
Born on January 2, 1971, Uma Shankar Singh a resident of Khanwar village of Ballia district, belongs to a farming family. After studying in government schools, he joined Satish Chandra College in Ballia, where he entered student politics. In 1991, he won the college’s student union election by a record margin.
He entered the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in 2012 after winning the Rasra seat on a BSP ticket by defeating Samajwadi Party’s Sangram Singh Yadav. He retained the constituency in the 2017 Assembly elections, defeating BJP candidate Ram Iqbal Singh by 33,887 votes.
Beyond politics, Singh was known for his social work. In 2016, he organised the mass marriage of 351 Hindu and Muslim couples. The following year, he introduced 40 free Wi-Fi hotspots across the Rasra constituency, making internet access available to thousands of residents. His work on local development and welfare helped him build a strong connect with people in the region.
