The National Testing Agency has announced tighter security, surveillance and candidate-support measures for the NEET UG 2026 retest scheduled for Sunday, June 21, as over 22 lakh medical aspirants prepare to take the examination amid continuing concern over alleged paper leak claims.

Aspirants entering exam centre for NEET UG 2026 retest

The National Testing Agency is conducting the NEET UG 2026 retest on Sunday, June 21, for over 22 lakh medical aspirants, implementing enhanced security with extensive CCTV, jammers, and biometric checks across 5,454 centres nationwide to ensure a fair and secure examination following alleged paper leaks.

The retest, widely referred to by students as Re-NEET, follows the cancellation of the May 3 examination after allegations of a paper leak triggered protests, political attacks and demands for accountability from the Union education ministry. The NTA has said the fresh examination will be conducted in a “fair, secure and candidate-friendly” manner.

The agency has also warned candidates and parents against relying on unverified social media posts. It said online claims about leaks and fake question papers are being monitored, and action is being taken against those spreading rumours or attempting fraud. The advisory comes at a time when many aspirants remain anxious after weeks of uncertainty.

NEET UG 2026 retest to be held across 5,454 centres

According to the NTA, the retest will be conducted at 5,440 centres in 551 cities across India, along with 14 centres abroad. The examination will be available in English and 12 Indian languages, keeping the format accessible for candidates from different regions and education boards.

The scale of the exercise is unusually large. The agency said more than 95,000 examination rooms will be used for the test. Each room will have CCTV surveillance, with a total of 1,38,560 cameras installed across centres. These feeds will be monitored at national, state and ministry levels.

To prevent electronic malpractice, 51,311 jammers have been deployed. These include 17,054 jammers provided by Electronics Corporation of India Limited and 34,257 by Bharat Electronics Limited. The measure is aimed at blocking unauthorised communication devices inside and around examination centres.

The NTA has said each examination room will have two invigilators. Every centre will also have more than 10 additional examination functionaries to handle entry, verification, room supervision and emergency coordination. The agency’s focus is to reduce crowding while maintaining stricter checks.

Biometric checks, CCTV monitoring and AI tools

Candidate verification is being strengthened through frisking, biometric checks and face authentication. The NTA said 38,795 frisking staff and 48,448 biometric verification personnel have been deployed. Biometric manpower has been doubled to make verification more thorough without creating long queues outside centres.

A Centre Systems Officer has been placed at each of the 5,440 centres in India. These officers will monitor CCTV feeds locally and address technical issues during the examination. The NTA said this will help ensure that surveillance and digital systems remain functional throughout the test window.

The agency has also deployed around 6,700 observers at examination centres. More than 100 virtual observers will monitor CCTV footage centrally. The footage will also be analysed using artificial intelligence-based tools to flag unusual activity, adding another layer to the monitoring system.

These arrangements are significant because the NEET controversy has placed the examination process under intense public scrutiny. For candidates, the retest is not only another academic challenge but also an emotional burden after months of preparation, uncertainty and public debate over exam integrity.

Security deployment and movement of exam material

The NTA said state and district administrations have been involved in preparations. Police, paramilitary personnel, Indian Air Force staff and Department of Posts officials are also part of the arrangements. On average, around 40 to 50 security personnel have been deployed at each examination centre.

Bank officials have been assigned duties at about 1,500 branches where confidential examination material is being held. The Department of Posts will coordinate the collection of OMR sheets from around 700 collection centres after the examination. These steps are meant to secure both pre-exam and post-exam handling.

Review meetings have been held with chief secretaries and senior officials of states. District authorities have also confirmed readiness at the centre level, the NTA said. A nationwide mock drill was conducted on Saturday to test jammers, CCTV systems, frisking arrangements and biometric verification.

Examination coordinators have verified the availability of confidential material stored in custodian banks. The agency said this pre-exam confirmation was part of its effort to avoid last-minute operational failures and ensure that centres are ready before candidates arrive on Sunday.

Facilities for candidates and parents

The NTA has said it is working with state governments to provide drinking water, ORS, ambulances and shaded waiting areas for parents. These arrangements are important because the exam will be held during summer conditions in several parts of the country.

Inside examination rooms, wall clocks will be provided. Candidates will also get additional rough-work pages. The NTA said pages will be placed at the beginning of the booklet for the convenience of left-handed candidates. The examination window has also been extended to compensate for time spent on entry formalities.

The agency has urged candidates to follow only official NTA communication for instructions on reporting time, admit cards, permitted items and centre rules. It has also appealed to parents, teachers and local authorities to help reduce exam-day stress and avoid spreading unverified information.

The NEET UG 2026 retest will be closely watched by students, families, courts, political parties and education authorities. For the NTA, the immediate test is operational credibility. For candidates, the priority is simpler: a secure examination where performance, not uncertainty, decides the outcome.
