Argentina survived the biggest scare of their FIFA World Cup 2026 defence in Miami, beating debutants Cabo Verde 3-2 after extra time in a Round of 32 tie that pushed Lionel Scaloni’s side to the edge. The world champions advanced to the Round of 16, but only after a night of repeated shocks, late saves and remarkable resistance from the African island nation.

Lionel Messi had put Argentina ahead in normal time, but Cabo Verde refused to accept a supporting role in their first World Cup knockout match. Deroy Duarte’s equaliser forced extra time, before goals involving Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero eventually carried Argentina through. Laros Cabral’s stunning extra-time strike ensured the result remained uncertain until the final minutes.

Argentina survived a tough FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match against debutants Cabo Verde, winning 3-2 after extra time thanks to goals from Lisandro Martinez and an own goal, securing their place in the Round of 16.

Argentina pushed all the way by fearless Cabo Verde

This was not the controlled knockout performance Argentina would have wanted. They had more possession, more territory and more experience, yet Cabo Verde repeatedly found ways to disrupt their rhythm. The debutants defended with discipline, broke forward with conviction and grew in belief each time goalkeeper Vozinha denied Argentina’s attackers.

Messi’s opener appeared to settle the defending champions, but Cabo Verde’s response changed the tone of the match. Duarte’s goal did more than level the score. It convinced Cabo Verde that Argentina could be hurt, and it turned the closing stages of normal time into a test of nerve for the champions.

Argentina pressed hard in stoppage time, with Leandro Paredes forcing Vozinha into another important save from distance. Eight added minutes gave Scaloni’s side time to avoid extra time, but Cabo Verde survived every delivery, block and second ball. When the whistle came at 1-1, the underdogs had already secured one of the stories of the tournament.

Extra time began with Argentina finally finding the direct route that had troubled Cabo Verde all night. A corner was attacked by Lisandro Martinez, whose header gave Argentina a 2-1 lead in the 93rd minute. It felt like the moment the champions might finally impose order on a chaotic tie.

Cabo Verde had other ideas. Laros Cabral produced one of the standout goals of the World Cup, cutting in from the left and bending a superb right-footed effort beyond Emiliano Martinez into the far corner. The strike froze Argentina and sent Cabo Verde’s supporters into disbelief, with the match suddenly level again at 2-2.

Messi corner helps decide World Cup thriller

The decisive moment arrived in the 111th minute from another Argentina corner. Messi’s delivery caused panic inside the Cabo Verde box, where Cristian Romero rose to meet it. The ball took a touch off Borges on its way in, with the goal recorded as an own goal, but Argentina cared little about the final attribution.

Even then, Cabo Verde were not finished. They pushed for a third equaliser and nearly found it from another dangerous set-piece. Lopes Cabral’s free-kick forced Emiliano Martinez into a fingertip save, one of the goalkeeper’s most important interventions of the night. Argentina also had to survive late pressure and a series of anxious clearances.

For Scaloni, the match will raise questions despite the result. Argentina were stretched by Cabo Verde’s pace in transition and were too often dependent on set-pieces once open-play combinations slowed. Their injuries and substitutions also disrupted their balance, with Facundo Medina forced off late in normal time and Nicolas Tagliafico coming on at left-back.

Messi remained central to Argentina’s attacking threat, but this was not a match settled by individual dominance alone. Cabo Verde’s structure forced Argentina into wide areas and crowded the central spaces. When Argentina did create openings, Vozinha repeatedly kept his side alive, including a sharp close-range save from Messi during extra time.

Cabo Verde exit with reputation enhanced

Cabo Verde’s campaign ended in defeat, but their performance in Miami will be remembered well beyond the scoreline. As World Cup debutants, they faced the defending champions in a knockout match and took them into extra time. More importantly, they did so without retreating into caution once they had equalised.

Their display showed why expanded World Cup formats can produce meaningful contests when emerging teams arrive well-organised and fearless. Cabo Verde were not merely relying on emotion. Their defensive shape, set-piece threat and quick counters forced Argentina into uncomfortable decisions throughout the match.

For Argentina, survival is the immediate headline. Knockout football often rewards persistence as much as fluency, and the champions found the margins they needed. Set-pieces, experience and Martinez’s late save proved enough on a night when their authority was tested more severely than expected.

Argentina move into the Round of 16 with their title defence intact, but the warning is clear. They will need more control and sharper defensive spacing against stronger opposition. Cabo Verde leave the World Cup after defeat, yet their performance in Miami ensured they exited with admiration rather than regret.
