Heavy monsoon rains caused destructive landslides in Mumbai and on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Monday, disrupting traffic and rail services, leading to diversions and cancellation of several trains.

Several videos of the newly inaugurated missing link of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway have gone viral on social media showcasing water gushing down the tunnel walls and the team is cleaning the debris after a landslide struck the route.

Landslide Hits Missing Link Tunnel

The massive landslide occurred near the exit of the Tunnel 2 on the Pune to Mumbai carriageway of the Khopoli- Kusgain Missing Link Alignment. Heavy rocks and mud also closed the way with authorities immediately closing the affected area.

Another video from the expressway showed rising water levels near the Khalapur Food Mall, where the overflowing Patalganga River added to the challenges faced by travellers.

Traffic Diverted On Mumbai-Pune Expressway

The landslide in Maharashtra led to roads diversions on the Mumbai- Pune carriageway from 4 am on Monday. It was a precautionary step to protect motorists as the restoration work continues.

The Missing Link project, which became operational only a few months ago, is a 13-kilometre bypass through the Sahyadri hills. It was built to shorten the distance between Mumbai and Pune by around six kilometres and reduce travel time by nearly 25 to 30 minutes.

Heavy Rain Disrupts Railway Services

Not just the roads but even the railway services has been disrupted. A landslide between Thakurvadi and Monkey Hill Loop Cabin on the Up Main Line between Karjat and Lonavala blocked railway tracks after rocks and debris fell onto the line.

As a result, the Central Railway cancelled several trains including- Indrayani Express, Deccan Express, Deccan Queen, Sinhagad Express, and more. Several long-distance trains were also diverted through alternative routes.

Taking a review on the situation, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the teams have been deployed to clear the tracks and restore services as quickly as possible. He further instructed the Western Railway and Central Railway employees to work together to speed up the restoration and minimize trouble.
