United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared that the ceasefire with Iran was effectively over from his perspective, saying he no longer wished to engage with Tehran following fresh tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters during the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump accused Iran of orchestrating attacks on commercial vessels and launched a scathing attack on the country’s leadership.
President Trump declared the US ceasefire with Iran effectively over following alleged Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, announcing retaliatory strikes and reaffirming the denuclearization objective.
Trump Declares End To Ceasefire
Addressing reporters, Trump said he had no intention of continuing any understanding with Iran after the latest developments in the Gulf region.
According to the US President, the decision followed attacks on three ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, incidents that Washington blamed on the Iranian military. In response, the United States carried out overnight strikes targeting what Trump described as dangerous elements inside Iran.
Sharp Attack On Iranian Leadership
During his remarks, Trump repeatedly criticised Iran, using unusually harsh language while defending the US military action.
“They’re liars, they’re cheats, they’re sick people. They’ve hurt their people. They killed 54,000 people – as of now – who were protesting. You know, when people say how come they haven’t taken over? They can’t take over because they’re dead.”
He also defended the overnight military operation, saying the strikes were aimed at individuals considered a major threat.
“We attacked very powerfully last night, the very dangerous people from Iran. They’re sick, there’s something wrong with them.”
US Reiterates Focus On Iran’s Nuclear Programme
Trump maintained that the United States’ objective remained preventing Iran from developing nuclear capabilities. Describing Iran as an “evil” nation, he warned that Washington would continue responding forcefully to any attack.
“We hit them [Iran] very hard last night. I told them that every time you hit, we hit, and, of course, they’re dirty players, so they go after everyone, probably including me. We don’t like them. I don’t like them. They’re evil people, and it’s the denuclearisation of Iran. And we’re going to denuke it.”
His comments signalled that the US administration intends to continue its hardline approach towards Tehran despite earlier discussions around a ceasefire.
