In a relief to Vijay’s TVK government, the Madras High Court on Friday allowed the state government to provide government jobs to the families of the victims.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay will hand over job offers to 32 people from the victim’s families on Friday. However, the court has directed the government to provide jobs on temporary basis.

The Madras High Court allowed the Tamil Nadu government to offer temporary government jobs to 32 families affected by the September 27 Karur stampede, permitting the policy decision to proceed subject to judicial review and Public Service Commission guidelines.

Justice CV Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel, who heard the matter, made it clear that they were not inclined to stall the government’s decision, observing that it would be “extremely narrow” for the court to second-guess a policy call taken by the executive.

“It would be extremely narrow for the court to interfere with a policy decision of the government. The state shall thus proceed with the function on the condition that employment would be on a temporary basis, subject to judicial review, and we intend to hear the matter by the end of this month, before the prospective persons to whom employment is offered, would receive their first salary,” Live Law quoted the bench as stating.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Theeran Thirumurugan, a Madurai-based lawyer, who challenged the decision of TVK government to provide government jobs to the families of 41 people who lost their lives in the Karur stampede on September 27, last year.

Thirumurugan had approached the court seeking directions to top government officials to refrain from issuing or implementing any appointment orders until the Supreme Court concluded its proceedings on the matter.

Meanwhile, Vijay is on his way to Karur to attend a series of party and government events. He will hand over the job offer letters at 3 pm at an event.

Vijay had visited Velusamypuram for a political rally. Unfortunately, the event ended in tragedy as 41 people were killed, including 17 women and 10 children.

Vijay had then paid Rs 20 lakh each to the victims’ families. However, he could not visit Karur.

He had then met the families at a resort in Chennai.
