In a major boost to India’s power infrastructure, REC Limited and PFC Limited have signed a Common Loan Agreement worth ₹26,850 crore with Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUNPL) for the development of the 2,400 MW Meja Thermal Power Project Stage-II in Uttar Pradesh.

MUNPL is a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL). The project will comprise three ultra-supercritical generating units of 800 MW each (3×800 MW) equipped with an Air Cooled Condenser (ACC) system at Meja Tehsil in Prayagraj district. The total estimated project cost stands at ₹38,357.81 crore. REC is the lead financier for the project, while the loan amount will be funded equally by REC and PFC. The loan documents were signed in Prayagraj by MUNPL Chief Executive Officer Srinivasa Rao Gaddamanugu, REC Lucknow Regional Office Chief General Manager Shambhu Shankar Gupta, and PFC General Manager Shelly Gupta. The signing ceremony was attended by MUNPL Chief Financial Officer Angshu Barua, PFC Executive Director H. K. Das, REC Executive Director D. B. Londhe, and other senior officials.

The Meja Super Thermal Power Project Stage-II is expected to significantly enhance Uttar Pradesh’s energy security by ensuring reliable electricity supply to households, agriculture, and industries. The project will also support the state’s long-term economic and industrial growth objectives.
The use of ultra-supercritical technology and an Air Cooled Condenser system will improve fuel efficiency while reducing coal consumption and emissions compared to conventional thermal power plants, making the project more environmentally sustainable.
Employment Generation and Infrastructure Development
The project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases. It will also accelerate infrastructure development in Meja Tehsil, Prayagraj. Additionally, the project will provide stable power supply to industrial corridors, manufacturing clusters, and expanding urban centres, strengthening the region’s industrial ecosystem and contributing to overall economic development
