Prashant Kishor has achieved the biggest electoral breakthrough of his political career by winning the Bankipur Assembly bypoll, ending the BJP’s 35-year dominance in one of Patna’s most prestigious constituencies. The victory gives the Jan Suraaj Party its first seat in the Bihar Assembly and marks Kishor’s transition from election strategist to elected politician. The result is also a symbolic setback for the BJP, as Bankipur had long been identified with its newly appointed national president, Nitin Nabin, and his family.
Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party won the Bankipur Assembly bypoll, securing its first seat in the Bihar Assembly and ending the BJP’s 35-year hold on the Patna constituency. The victory marks Kishor’s entry into elected politics and challenges the BJP’s traditional urban strongholds.
A Historic Blow to BJP’s Traditional Bastion
Bankipur has been a BJP stronghold for more than three decades. Before Nitin Nabin represented the seat, it was held by his father, veteran BJP leader Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha. Following his father’s death, Nitin Nabin won the 2006 bypoll from the then Patna West constituency and retained the seat after delimitation in the 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025 Assembly elections.
His 2025 victory was particularly decisive, with 98,299 votes and a winning margin of 51,936 votes. When Nabin later moved to the Rajya Sabha and became BJP national president, the bypoll was expected to keep the seat within the party’s fold. Instead, the result has broken a political legacy that lasted for 35 years.
Why the Bankipur Bypoll Became a High-Stakes Contest
The election drew statewide attention after Prashant Kishor entered the race. The BJP also made headlines by replacing its original candidate, Abhishek Kumar Sinha (Bunty), with Neeraj Kumar Sinha after the nomination process, a move that sparked political debate.
Although Nitin Nabin was not contesting, his political influence remained central to the campaign. Senior BJP leaders actively campaigned, while Jan Suraaj projected the election as an opportunity to challenge the ruling party in one of its safest urban seats.
Governance, Youth Issues and Low Turnout Shaped the Result
After launching the Jan Suraaj movement in 2022 and converting it into a political party in 2024, Kishor failed to win a seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election, where the party secured around 3.44 per cent of the statewide vote. Bankipur became his chance to establish electoral credibility.
Instead of focusing only on caste equations, Kishor centred his campaign on civic issues such as roads, drainage, water supply, traffic congestion and pollution. He also highlighted concerns over examination transparency, recruitment delays and student grievances, issues that resonated in a constituency with a large student and coaching population.
Polling recorded a turnout of 34.24 per cent. During the campaign, Kishor alleged voter intimidation and misuse of police powers by the administration, accusations that were rejected by the authorities.
What the Victory Means for Bihar Politics
The Bankipur bypoll result is significant beyond a single Assembly seat. It gives Jan Suraaj its first legislative representation and strengthens Prashant Kishor’s position ahead of future political battles in Bihar.
For the BJP, the defeat raises questions about retaining traditional urban strongholds despite its strong organisational network. While one bypoll does not determine the outcome of a general election, the result signals that established political bastions can be challenged when local issues and voter sentiment converge.
