Two people were killed and at least six others were feared trapped after a landslide hit Mumbai’s Kurla area around 3 am on Wednesday following heavy rain.

The incident took place around 3:48 am in Ashok Nagar, which falls under the Ghatkopar police station’s jurisdiction. Police, BMC officials, NDRF personnel and other rescue teams were sent to the spot and were searching through the debris for those still missing.

A landslide in Mumbai’s Kurla (Ashok Nagar) area early Wednesday, triggered by heavy rain, killed Sahil Ansari (28) and Mohamad Samir (14), injured two others, and left at least six people feared trapped as rescue operations continue.

“Due to the rain, a landslide has occurred in the Ashoknagar area under the jurisdiction of the Ghatkopar police. Two bodies have been recovered so far, and rescue operation is underway,” Shinde told news agency ANI.

The two people who died were identified as 28-year-old Sahil Ansari and 14-year-old Mohamad Samir. Both were taken to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.

Two others, identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, were injured and taken to the same hospital. Their condition was reported to be stable.

”6-8 persons are likely to be trapped. The incident took place at 0348 hours. A rescue operation is going on. Teams of MFB, Police, 108 Ambulance, NDRF & ward staff are present at the spot. Two injured persons include Sohel Ansari (18) and Mohamad Ansari (14). Two bodies are sent to the nearest hospital. Further details are awaited,” BMC said.

The number of people feared trapped later rose to at least six as rescue teams continued to clear the debris. Officials were working to find out how many people were at the site when the landslide occurred.

The landslide came after heavy rain in Mumbai in the early hours of Wednesday, with rescue operations continuing at the site.
