Putin fumes as Japan begins military buildup in Pacific: Why Tokyo’s rearmament is angering Russia

Putin has accused Japan of escalating tensions in the Asia-Pacific, while warning that NATO-linked alliances and new weapons deployments are creating growing security risks for Russia. Speaking in Russia’s Far East, President Vladimir Putin backed plans to strengthen the Pacific Fleet and criticised Japan’s sanctions and defence policies. Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liina also warned of rising military tensions, pointing to Japan’s defence strategy, AUKUS, QUAD and other regional groupings. Putin said Russia remains open to cooperation with Japan and other neighbours, while stressing the importance of protecting Russian security and maritime interests in the Asia-Pacific region.
