Hours after a powerful earthquake in Indonesia on Saturday, another powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Indonesia.
Following an initial earthquake that killed at least 38 people and caused widespread damage in Indonesia, a second powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the region, adding to concerns amid ongoing rescue operations.
The country recorded death of at least 47 people and widespread damage after the first jolt. The latest tremor has added to concerns in the region as rescue teams continue to search for survivors and assess the damage caused by the earlier quake.
Suharyanto, head of Indonesian National Agency for Disaster Management, said that 47 people have died due to the earlier quake.
Two people have been seriously injured, while 11 more people have got minor injuries. About 2,000 people evacuated themselves from their houses and took refuge elsewhere.
6.9-Magnitude Quake Strikes After Deadly Tremor
The officials state that the previous 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the Flores around 5:58 am local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was near 68 kilometers northwest of Ende, in East Nusa Tenggara province.
There were several aftershocks after that strong earthquake, including today’s 6.9 magnitude earthquake, causing worries for the population who have been experiencing damage to their properties and infrastructure.
There was a Tsunami warning following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake, Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning and advised people living in coastal areas to move towards higher ground.
Power Cuts Disrupt Rescue Operations
East Nusa Tenggara Police Chief Rudi Darmoko said the earthquake caused extensive damage and brought down several structures.
Power outages in cities and villages also disrupted communication, making it harder for authorities to collect information about casualties and damage.
2,000 Residents Move To Temporary Shelters
Around 2,000 residents in Nagekeo regency reportedly left their homes and moved to temporary shelters following the earthquake.
Many residents in affected areas have remained outside their homes due to concerns about damaged structures and continuing tremors.
Authorities are continuing to assess buildings, roads and other infrastructure while rescue operations remain underway.
