Did Astros fire Dana Brown? MLB insider drops bombshell, challenges ‘mutual parting’ narrative

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown is leaving the organization after the club announced Monday that the two sides had “mutually agreed to part ways.” The decision came while Houston remained tied for first place in the AL West.

Brown’s exit followed a disappointing homestand in which the Astros went 3-6, allowing the Texas Rangers to pull level with them atop the division. His contract was already scheduled to expire at the end of the season.

Insiders question mutual parting narrative

Although the Astros described the move as a mutual decision, reports and reactions from several MLB insiders have suggested that Brown was effectively fired.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal was particularly direct when discussing the decision on Foul Territory TV. “Not exactly a surprise that they are moving on from Dana Brown and enough of the mutual partings already, please. It’s firing,” Rosenthal said.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale also reported that Brown had been dismissed.

“He was informed of the decision Sunday night, they agreed to call it a mutual parting Monday morning, and he was already packing his bags and taking off for his home in New Jersey,” Nightengale wrote in a USA Today report.

Nightengale also suggested that the timing, rather than the decision itself, was the surprising part.

He wrote on X, “The only surprise about Dana Brown’s departure as the Houston Astros’ GM was the timing. The Astros had no intention of giving him a new contract at the season, anyway, so now he leaves a month early.”

Why would the Astros fire Dana Brown?

With Brown gone, senior adviser Jeff Bagwell and assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey and Connor Huff will assume his responsibilities. Owner Jim Crane will oversee baseball operations while the Astros navigate the transition.

The decision came amid a difficult stretch for Houston. The club’s 3-6 homestand ended Sunday, and the Astros have now fallen into a tie with Texas for the AL West lead.

Astros insider Michael Schwab also pointed to the team’s recent form as a possible factor in Brown’s departure. “I think getting below .500 could have been the culprit. Also 7-11 since the trade deadline,” Schwab tweeted.

Schwab argued that injuries could no longer serve as an explanation for the team’s struggles and instead questioned the construction of the roster.

“What hurt Dana Brown this season is the injury excuse couldn’t be used again. The problem now is the roster. It’s the signing of players who couldn’t make an impact. The team wasn’t built for the long haul and it shows,” Schwab noted.

Brown bids farewell to Houston

Brown took over as Houston’s general manager in January 2023 after spending four seasons as the Atlanta Braves’ vice president of scouting. He succeeded James Click, whose contract was not renewed shortly after the Astros won the 2022 World Series.

Brown thanked the organization and its owner for giving him his first opportunity as an MLB general manager.

“I want to thank Jim Crane for the opportunity to serve in my first role as an MLB General Manager. The Astros organization and the fans have welcomed me and my family, and I am grateful to have called Houston home for the past four seasons,” Brown said.

With inputs from AP report.
