The future of the Impact Player rule remains uncertain ahead of IPL 2027, with the BCCI choosing to delay a final decision after discussing the matter at the latest IPL Governing Council meeting.
The rule, introduced in the IPL in 2023, allows each team to replace a player during a match with a designated substitute. It has since become an important tactical tool, allowing teams to bring in an additional specialist batter or bowler depending on the situation.
The BCCI is delaying a final decision on the IPL’s Impact Player rule, introduced in 2023, seeking further stakeholder feedback amid franchise debate regarding its continuation.
However, its continuation has remained a subject of debate. According to reports, a majority of IPL franchises have expressed opposition to retaining the rule. At the same time, some teams have argued that it should remain for at least another season because their squad-building decisions were made with the Impact Player provision in place.
BCCI seeks more feedback
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said the board will consult stakeholders before taking a final call.
“The matter is under discussion,” Dhumal said, adding that feedback from stakeholders would be considered before a decision is made.
The Governing Council is expected to revisit the issue at another meeting in approximately a month. Until then, the Impact Player provision remains under consideration rather than being formally retained or scrapped.
Why the rule has become a major talking point
The Impact Player system has changed the way teams construct their playing XIs. A side can effectively separate its batting and bowling combinations by using the substitution option at a suitable point in the match.
The rule has also been linked to the IPL’s changing tactical and scoring trends. Cricket analysis has noted that the additional batting option has influenced how aggressively teams approach their innings.
Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill previously criticised the concept, arguing that an extra batter can reduce the importance of all-round skills and make the game more one-dimensional.
For now, however, the BCCI has left the issue open. The next Governing Council meeting could determine whether the Impact Player becomes a permanent part of the IPL, continues for another season or is eventually removed from the competition.
