In the latest development, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has said that making women safer in the national capital need not necessarily translate into more restrictions on girls; rather, boys should also be educated about respect, boundaries, and consent.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that enhancing women’s safety in the national capital requires educating boys about respect and consent, not solely restricting girls. Speaking at Maitreyi College, she also encouraged young women to prioritize their education and careers.

Gupta made the observations while addressing students of Maitreyi College at the ‘Parampara Se Pragati’ event organized at the college premises on Wednesday. She talked about the freedom of women and motivated the young girls to concentrate on their education and careers.

Gupta Questions Restrictions On Girls

In terms of the events that give rise to fear regarding the safety of women, Gupta remarked that the usual response of the families is that the girls are told about where they need to go, what they need to do, and how they need to behave.

Gupta pointed out that there cannot be any safety measures that can be made to depend on the girls only. As per Gupta, boys should get equal attention while talking about appropriate behavior.

‘First, Choose Yourself’: Gupta To Young Women

The Chief Minister also used her interaction with the students to speak about women’s personal goals.

Gupta said women often put family responsibilities ahead of their own ambitions. She encouraged the students to give importance to their own growth and aspirations, telling them to “first, choose yourself.”

She also spoke about her own journey, saying that during her student years she had not imagined that she would eventually become Delhi’s Chief Minister and address young women at a college programme.

Safety Requires More Than Restrictions

Gupta’s remarks presented women’s safety as a responsibility involving more than restrictions on women’s movement.

The Chief Minister said families and society must also focus on how boys are taught to behave around women. She said respect, responsibility and consent need to be part of this approach.

Her comments came amid continuing discussions over safety in Delhi’s public spaces. The issue has also involved questions about policing, surveillance, lighting and security around areas used by women and students.

Gupta Says Wrongdoers Will Face Action

In the midst of the conversation, Gupta mentioned that people involved in any wrongdoings would be held accountable. She also gave her support to women and girls who stand up for themselves and said that she wished for Delhi to become a place where women do not have to walk with fear.
