In healthcare today, technology plays a critical role in connecting patients with doctors. From virtual visits to online patient portals, these systems must be reliable and secure. Any downtime can disrupt care and cause frustration for both patients and providers. Building cloud-based systems that meet these high standards is a complex task.

One engineering leader has spent the last several years guiding teams to tackle this challenge. With a master’s in Information Systems Management and more than five years of experience building cloud applications, Deepanjan Mukherjee has grown from managing small teams to directing entire engineering departments. His focus is on designing systems that are not only HIPAA-compliant but can also support millions of users at once.

Deepanjan Mukherjee, an engineering leader, is crucial in building reliable healthcare cloud systems. His work ensures virtual visits, patient portals, and mobile apps remain secure and accessible for millions. Discover how his expertise in balancing performance, cost, and security, alongside exploring AI, keeps critical healthcare platforms running seamlessly.

Deepanjan Mukherjee Ensuring Your Healthcare Tech Stays Online

His work became particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic. He led the development and launch of a virtual appointments platform, helping clinics continue patient care without in-person visits. Today, that platform handles around 550,000 virtual visits each month. His teams have also built a modern self check-in system, an improved referral management system, and a patient portal that sees nearly nine million monthly active users online. Mobile apps for iOS and Android have about one million active users each month and maintain a 4.8 out of 5 rating from real users.

Keeping these systems running smoothly requires careful planning. Although zero downtime is the ideal, maintaining it in practice is highly demanding. Most high-performing systems therefore aim for 99.99% uptime, allowing only a few minutes of disruption annually. To reach that, his teams use cloud redundancies, which means if one part of the system fails, another automatically takes over. These backups are tested regularly to make sure they work when needed.

The professional highlighted how reliability also comes with costs. Adding more backups increases expenses, so leaders like him must find ways to balance performance, risk, and budget while aligning technical decisions with business priorities. He emphasizes working closely with product teams, designers, analysts, and clinicians to make sure that technical decisions reflect real patient and provider needs. Security is another key priority. HIPAA compliance is built into the system from day one, not added later. Applications are updated and patched regularly, usually during low-traffic hours to avoid disruption. Every piece of code is tested before it goes live to reduce the chance of failure.

Beyond practical engineering, he is also exploring research in the field of AI. His paper, “A Multi-agent Security Framework for AI-Assisted Software Development,” looks at how AI can help manage security at every stage of development. This approach could help detect and prevent potential problems before they affect users.

Looking forward, he sees AI playing an even bigger role in healthcare cloud systems. From predicting failures to monitoring performance and security, automation can help ensure systems stay online. Some organizations are also spreading workloads across multiple cloud providers to avoid relying on just one.

For patients and healthcare providers, the work of engineering leaders like Mukherjee forms a critical foundation for reliable care, even if it is not always visible in day-to-day interactions. The lesson is clear: reliable cloud systems require ongoing care, planning, and leadership. The combination of technical skill, team coordination, and a focus on security and performance is what keeps critical healthcare platforms running day after day.
