Even as Iran publicly says there are no immediate plans for a fresh round of negotiations with the United States, diplomatic signals from Pakistan and remarks by US President Donald Trump suggest that backchannel movement is accelerating, with Islamabad emerging as a possible venue for high-stakes talks in the coming days.

US-Iran Talks In Doubt
US-Iran Talks In Doubt

Despite Iran denying immediate US talks following a Strait of Hormuz ship seizure, Pakistan indicates accelerated backchannel diplomacy, with President Trump stating a US team led by JD Vance is en route to Islamabad for potential negotiations.

The mixed messaging has added fresh uncertainty to an already volatile regional picture. On one side, Tehran has pushed back against speculation of renewed engagement after the United States seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. On the other, Pakistan appears to be actively preparing the ground for discussions, while Trump has claimed a US team led by JD Vance is already headed to the Pakistani capital.

As Nobel-winning journalist and novelist Gabriel García Márquez once observed, “It is easier to start a war than to end it.” The line, often associated with his reflections on conflict and echoed in spirit in One Hundred Years of Solitude, feels especially relevant at a moment when diplomacy, brinkmanship and regional escalation are colliding once again.

Iran Rules Out Fresh Talks For Now After Strait Of Hormuz Flashpoint

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has said the government currently has no plans for a new round of talks, signalling a hardening posture after the United States seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

The seizure appears to have further complicated already fragile diplomatic channels, with Tehran choosing to publicly distance itself from any immediate negotiation process. The statement underlines how rapidly tensions in the Gulf can derail even tentative openings for dialogue, particularly when military and maritime confrontations are involved.

Iran’s latest position suggests that while informal contacts may still exist behind the scenes, any formal talks remain politically difficult in the immediate aftermath of the US action.

Trump Says US Delegation Led By JD Vance Is Heading To Islamabad

Despite Tehran’s public denial, US President Donald Trump has said that an American team led by JD Vance is on its way to Islamabad for talks, fuelling speculation that Washington is still pushing for a diplomatic opening through Pakistan.

Trump’s claim points to a possible disconnect between public posturing and private diplomacy, a familiar pattern in crises involving Iran and the United States. If accurate, the move would place Pakistan in a central intermediary role at a highly sensitive moment, with Islamabad potentially serving as a neutral venue for urgent discussions.

The announcement has also sharpened focus on whether the US is pursuing a limited crisis-management channel rather than a broader political breakthrough, especially after the Strait of Hormuz incident deepened mistrust.

Pakistan Steps Up Contacts With Iran And The US

Meanwhile, Pakistani leaders have intensified their communications with Iran and the US, indicating that talks in Islamabad are likely to take place shortly, former Pakistani Ambassador to the UAE Jamil Khan told Al Jazeera.

“Things are speeding up,” Khan said. “In the coming 24 to 48 hours, issues will be addressed, and the Iranian delegation will be there.”

Khan’s remarks suggest Pakistan is not merely hosting but actively facilitating movement between the two sides. His comments indicate that Islamabad may be attempting to create enough diplomatic momentum to overcome Tehran’s current public reluctance.

The emphasis on a 24-to-48-hour window also points to a rapidly evolving situation, where developments could unfold much faster than official statements currently suggest.

Lebanon Link, Separate Tracks And Uranium Set To Dominate Next Phase

According to Khan, Iran had placed Lebanon at the top of its list of demands, seeking to have it included in the ceasefire framework and effectively linking negotiations with the US to Israel’s war in Lebanon.

The former diplomat said this became a key sticking point in the process, as Tehran wanted the broader regional conflict reflected in any diplomatic arrangement rather than treating it as a standalone dispute.

Khan argued that Trump “very smartly” addressed that obstacle by creating a separate negotiation track, thereby decoupling the Iran-US file from the Lebanon conflict.

If that separation holds, Khan believes the next phase of talks will likely shift away from Lebanon and focus more squarely on Iran’s nuclear issue, particularly its enriched uranium stockpile.

He predicted that Iran’s enriched uranium would be at the forefront of the next round of negotiations, including questions around its dilution and disposal.

That would mark a significant narrowing of the agenda, potentially making talks more technically focused but no less politically fraught. For now, the contradiction remains stark: Iran says no talks are planned, Pakistan says preparations are under way, and Trump says the Americans are already on the move. In a crisis like this, the truth often lies not in the headlines, but in what happens behind closed doors.
