Bengaluru reported its first suspected Ebola case on Tuesday after a 28-year-old woman from Uganda developed mild symptoms associated with the virus and was shifted to a state-run isolation facility, health department officials said.

The Ugandan national had reportedly arrived in the city from an Ebola-affected region and was staying at a hotel before she complained of symptoms such as body ache. As a precautionary measure, authorities moved her to the Epidemic Diseases Hospital in Bengaluru for observation and treatment.

Bengaluru reported its first suspected Ebola case of a 28-year-old Ugandan woman, whose samples were sent to NIV Pune for testing, prompting Karnataka’s Health Department to enhance surveillance and preparedness statewide.

Officials said blood and swab samples from the woman have been collected and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for laboratory testing. The reports are currently awaited.

Health authorities clarified that the Ebola infection has not yet been confirmed and that further testing will determine the final diagnosis. As per protocol, a repeat test will also be conducted.

The suspected case has prompted Karnataka’s Health Department to intensify surveillance and preparedness measures across the state amid growing global concern over Ebola cases reported in parts of Africa.

Hospitals have been directed to maintain strict infection-control measures, while Rapid Response Teams and surveillance officials have been placed on alert. Monitoring at airports and other entry points has also been strengthened, particularly for travellers arriving from Ebola-affected countries.

Officials reiterated that there are currently no confirmed Ebola cases in Karnataka or elsewhere in India and urged the public not to panic, stating that the measures being taken are preventive in nature.

Ebola virus disease is a severe and often fatal illness that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. Early symptoms commonly include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle pain and sore throat, while severe cases may lead to vomiting, rashes, bleeding and organ failure.
