Earthquake Strikes Near Puerto Madero
Based on the US Geological survey, the earthquake struck near Puerto Madero – a coastal city in Mexico’s Chiapas state. However the earthquake occurred in a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
But one must know that even shallow earthquakes can often produce strong shaking because the seismic waves have a shorter distance to travel before reaching populated areas. The impact of the quake was not limited to Mexico. Strong tremors were reported across the border in parts of Central America.
Tsunami Threat Alert Issued After Earthquake
After the massive earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat alert for the region. Such warnings are issued after strong undersea or coastal earthquakes when there is a possibility that the movement of the Earth’s crust could disturb the ocean and generate dangerous waves.
Authorities continued to monitor sea levels and developments in coastal areas following the earthquake.
Tremors Felt in Guatemala and El Salvador
The earthquake was not just experienced in Puerto Madero but also in the neighbouring countries. Several videos on social media showcase people rushing out of their offices and houses.
The residents of the affected areas were advised to remain alert as authorities carried out assessments and monitored the possibility of aftershocks.
The good part is that till now no reports of casualties have been reported in the earthquake.
