Sharp differences within the DMK-Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu are becoming increasingly visible, raising questions about its internal stability and long-term viability. Public disagreements, weak coordination and inconsistent messaging have created an impression of a partnership facing strain rather than operating with a shared political direction.

A key concern is the absence of a common strategy. The two parties have released separate manifestos, with little evidence of joint planning or policy alignment. This lack of coordination at the foundational level has led observers to question how the alliance would function cohesively in governance. Seat-sharing negotiations further exposed underlying mistrust, as prolonged discussions and indications that Congress would not receive cabinet representation reinforced perceptions of imbalance within the partnership.

The DMK-Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu faces strain from internal disagreements, separate manifestos, and coordination issues, contrasting with the cohesive image projected by the NDA under Narendra Modi.

Differences have also emerged over the alliance’s public identity. Rahul Gandhi has referred to the grouping as the INDIA alliance, while M. K. Stalin continues to use a different formulation. While seemingly a matter of terminology, such divergence reflects a broader lack of consensus and has contributed to perceptions of disunity.

Leadership optics have added to this narrative. Rahul Gandhi and M.K. Stalin have rarely shared public platforms in recent times, prompting speculation about the depth of coordination between them. During a recent speech, Gandhi acknowledged Mamata Banerjee but did not mention Stalin, an omission that drew attention in political circles. Such instances, though individually minor, collectively reinforce the perception of distance within the alliance leadership.

Tensions are also evident beyond the top leadership. Congress leaders have expressed concerns over governance and organisational issues, while DMK members have questioned Congress’s ground-level capacity. Criticism from within the broader alliance has further highlighted these strains. Premalatha Vijayakanth of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam publicly raised issues related to crime and social challenges in the state, remarks that were seen as indicative of unease within sections of the alliance itself.

In contrast, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has sought to project a more cohesive and coordinated image under Narendra Modi. In Tamil Nadu, leaders including Edappadi K. Palaniswami, K. Annamalai, Anbumani Ramadoss, T. T. V. Dhinakaran and G. K. Vasan have appeared aligned in their messaging and political positioning.

The contrast between the two formations is becoming a defining feature of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. On one side is an alliance grappling with visible internal differences; on the other is a coalition emphasising coordination and unity. As voters assess these competing narratives, the ability of each bloc to maintain coherence and present a credible, unified front is likely to play a decisive role in shaping political outcomes in the state.
