In a major political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has crossed the 200-seat mark in the West Bengal Assembly elections, delivering a decisive blow to the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

In West Bengal elections, the BJP secured over 200 seats, marking a significant shift by defeating CM Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur and numerous senior TMC ministers, while Banerjee alleged post-poll violence and called for opposition unity.

One of the biggest highlights of the results was in Bhabanipur, where Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The loss in her home turf has been seen as a symbolic and political setback for the TMC leadership.

Several Senior TMC Leaders Lose Seats

The election results have also impacted several senior leaders from Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet. More than a dozen ministers reportedly lost their seats, including:

  • Sujit Bose
  • Bratya Basu
  • Shashi Panja
  • Udayan Guha
  • Chandrima Bhattacharya

These defeats reflect a significant shift in voter sentiment across multiple constituencies.

Mamata Banerjee Alleges Violence and Irregularities

Speaking at a press conference from Kalighat, Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the BJP and central agencies. She alleged that violence had increased after the election results.
“After coming to power, I said I want change, not revenge. But BJP has started atrocities,” she said.

She further claimed that party workers, including members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, were being targeted.

“They are creating pressure to force people to join their party. But not everyone bows down,” she added.

Banerjee also accused central forces of bias and alleged that votes were “looted,” though these claims remain politically contested.

Call for Opposition Unity

Despite the defeat, Mamata Banerjee signalled her intention to play a larger role in national politics. She emphasised the need to strengthen opposition unity against the BJP.
Her remarks suggest that the focus of the TMC may now expand beyond state politics to a broader national strategy.

Tight Security at Navanna

Amid the changing political situation, security has been significantly increased at Nabanna, the state secretariat.

Central forces have been deployed at entry and exit points, and strict instructions have been issued to ensure that no important documents or files are removed or destroyed. The Chief Secretary’s office has reportedly directed all departments to maintain full control over official records.

A Turning Point in Bengal Politics

The BJP’s strong performance and the defeat of several senior TMC leaders indicate a major transformation in West Bengal’s political landscape. The results highlight a shift in voter preferences and mark the end of a long period of TMC dominance.

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections have reshaped the state’s political map. While the BJP celebrates a historic win, the TMC faces the challenge of rebuilding its base.
At the same time, Mamata Banerjee’s sharp response and call for unity signal that the political contest is far from over, both in Bengal and at the national level.
