Vijay is set to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Saturday, May 9, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled to begin at 11 am.
The ceremony will mark a historic moment in Tamil Nadu politics as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam founder prepares to assume office after his party’s breakthrough performance in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Vijay, founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), will be sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 9th after securing support from the Indian National Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML, following his party’s performance in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Vijay staked claim to form the government after meeting Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar for the third time on Friday and submitting letters of support from alliance partners.
TVK had emerged as the single-largest party in the 234-member Assembly with 108 seats but initially fell short of the majority mark of 118. The numbers shifted in Vijay’s favour after support came in from the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League.
Congress contributed support from five MLAs, while CPI, CPI(M) and VCK backed the formation with two MLAs each. The IUML’s lone MLA further strengthened the alliance, helping Vijay comfortably cross the halfway mark required to form the government.
The Governor’s decision came after days of political uncertainty and debate over whether the single-largest party should be invited first in a fractured mandate. TVK leaders had accused Raj Bhavan of delaying the process, while opposition parties closely watched the rapid political developments.
Vijay’s swearing-in is being viewed as a major turning point in Tamil Nadu politics, ending decades of dominance by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
The actor-politician, who won from both Chennai Perambur and Trichy, is expected to retain the Chennai seat after assuming office as Chief Minister.
