Daily travel costs for Mumbai residents are set to rise as a fresh CNG price hike in Mumbai takes effect from Saturday, with both vehicle fuel and piped cooking gas getting dearer for commuters and over 31 lakh households across the region.

The revision affects residents in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and nearby areas where public transport and private vehicles rely heavily on gas. Autorickshaws, taxis, buses and several private cars use CNG, so the CNG price hike in Mumbai is expected to influence commuting expenses and household budgets together.

Mahanagar Gas Ltd has increased CNG price by Rs 2/kg to Rs 86/kg and piped cooking gas by 50 paise/unit to Rs 52/unit in Mumbai, affecting over 31 lakh households and commuters using CNG vehicles.

CNG price hike in Mumbai: New CNG and piped gas tariffs

Mahanagar Gas Ltd has raised the retail CNG rate by Rs 2 per kg, lifting it from Rs 84 per kg to Rs 86 per kg across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Under the same CNG price hike in Mumbai, piped natural gas for cooking will climb by 50 paise per unit.

The piped gas revision moves the domestic rate from Rs 51.50 per unit to Rs 52 per unit, affecting more than 31 lakh households. This CNG price hike in Mumbai will therefore hit both kitchen expenses and travel costs, especially where families depend on gas-based transport and cooking.

Item Old rate New rate Change
CNG fuel Rs 84 per kg Rs 86 per kg + Rs 2 per kg
Piped gas Rs 51.50 per unit Rs 52 per unit + 50 paise per unit

CNG price hike in Mumbai: Fare hike demands from auto and taxi unions

Public transport unions have already started working out new fare demands following the CNG price hike in Mumbai.

The transport department will now prepare a formal fare hike proposal and send it to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority, which decides final auto and taxi tariff changes. Taxi unions, also affected by the CNG price hike in Mumbai, have sought a base fare increase of Rs 2-3 to meet rising costs.

CNG price hike in Mumbai: Recent increases and reasons given by MGL

An MGL official noted that this is the second CNG price hike in Mumbai within the same month. The earlier increase on May 13 also raised CNG by Rs 2 per kg, while another rise of Re 1 per kg took place in April, pushing overall fuel costs higher.

Use of gas-powered vehicles has grown over the past year, deepening the impact of every CNG price hike in Mumbai. The region has added about two lakh CNG vehicles in twelve months, an increase of around 20%, taking the total CNG vehicle population to more than 12 lakh.

Category Approximate number
Total CNG vehicles in MMR Over 12 lakh
Auto-rickshaws About 4.7 lakh
Taxis Over 1.6 lakh
Private cars More than 5 lakh

Within this fleet, there are about 4.7 lakh autorickshaws and over 1.6 lakh taxis operating on CNG across Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Navi Mumbai and Raigad. More than five lakh private cars also use gas, meaning every CNG price hike in Mumbai influences both commercial and personal transport segments.

MGL supplies CNG to 1,969 buses of BEST, TMT, MSRTC and NMMT, along with 51,311 private buses and tempos. This large dependence on gas-powered mass transport means the latest CNG price hike in Mumbai will touch many daily routes, though final passenger fares depend on future tariff decisions.

With more vehicles and households tied to gas, the current CNG price hike in Mumbai increases pressure on commuters and residents, while regulators and unions focus on fare revisions. Further decisions by the transport authority will determine how sharply commuters feel the effect of the higher fuel and piped gas rates.
