TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee was allegedly attacked and injured on the head by BJP supporters while protesting the arrest of party workers outside Chanditala Police Station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday, escalating political tensions.

The incident comes a day after TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee faced protests and alleged harassment during a visit to Sonarpur, highlighting the growing political tensions in the state following recent incidents of post-poll violence.

What Happened at Chanditala Police Station?

According to Kalyan Banerjee, he had gone to Chanditala Police Station along with local TMC workers to submit a deputation against the alleged arrest and harassment of party members.

The TMC leader claimed that while he was participating in a protest outside the police station, a group of protesters gathered nearby, waved black flags, and raised slogans against him. He alleged that objects were thrown at him from a distance, causing an injury to his head.

Speaking to reporters after the incident, Banerjee said he was bleeding from the head and accused BJP supporters of targeting him.

“I was coming alone. There was no one with me. BJP members used abusive language and hit me on the head with a ball. My head is bleeding. People will decide whether it is right or wrong that MPs are being continuously targeted,” he said.

Following the incident, Banerjee was seen holding a handkerchief against the injured area of his head and sitting in protest outside the police station.

TMC Alleges Political Targeting

The Trinamool Congress has alleged that the attack was politically motivated and linked to ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the BJP in West Bengal.

Banerjee accused BJP workers of attempting to intimidate opposition leaders and claimed that such incidents were becoming increasingly common.

During his protest, he appealed to the people of West Bengal to raise their voices against what he described as growing political violence.

The TMC MP also criticised the local police administration, alleging that adequate security arrangements had not been made despite the sensitive nature of the protest.

Protest Linked to Arrest of TMC Workers

According to party leaders, Sunday’s demonstration was organised to protest the alleged detention and arrest of several TMC workers in different parts of the state.

A large number of party supporters had gathered outside Chanditala Police Station to submit a memorandum and demand action regarding what they described as harassment of their workers.

The situation reportedly became tense when counter-protesters arrived at the spot and raised slogans against the TMC leadership.

Incident Follows Protest Against Abhishek Banerjee

The latest controversy comes just one day after TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee faced protests during a visit to Sonarpur.

Abhishek had travelled to meet the family of a party worker who was reportedly killed in post-poll violence. However, upon reaching the area, he encountered angry protesters.
According to reports, slogans were raised against him, while some individuals allegedly threw shoes, eggs, and other objects in his direction. Visuals from the scene showed heightened security and tense exchanges between supporters and protesters.

The TMC has alleged that the protest was planned by political opponents, while rival parties have denied the accusations.

Political Tensions Continue in West Bengal

The incidents involving both Kalyan Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee have intensified the political confrontation between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal.

Both parties have traded allegations over political violence, law and order, and the treatment of their workers and leaders.

As investigations into Sunday’s incident continue, political observers believe the developments could further escalate tensions in the state, where both parties remain locked in a fierce political battle.

For now, authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack on Kalyan Banerjee and determine whether further action is required.
