The Pakistan women’s cricket team has been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining a slow over-rate during its Women’s T20 World Cup Group A match against India. The game, played at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sunday, saw Harmanpreet Kaur-led India secure a convincing victory, while Pakistan faced an additional setback off the field.

The Pakistan women’s cricket team was fined five percent of their match fee by the ICC for a slow over-rate during their Women’s T20 World Cup match against India in Birmingham on Sunday, which India won convincingly by 64 runs.

According to the ICC, Pakistan was found to be one over short after the required time allowances were taken into account, leading to a financial penalty for the entire team.

Why Did the ICC Fine Pakistan?

The ICC announced that the Pakistan women’s team has been fined five percent of their match fee for failing to complete their overs within the allotted time during the match against India.

The sanction was imposed by Trudy Anderson, a member of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. After reviewing the match and considering the standard time allowances, officials determined that Pakistan had bowled one over fewer than required.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are penalised for minimum over-rate offences. The rules state that players lose five percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the scheduled time limit.

Captain Fatima Sana Accepts the Penalty

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana admitted the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, meaning there was no need for a formal disciplinary hearing.

The charge was brought by the on-field umpires Claire Polosak and Jacqueline Williams, along with third umpire Eloise Sheridan and fourth umpire Sue Redfern.

By accepting responsibility, the matter was resolved quickly, with the ICC confirming the fine shortly after the conclusion of the match.

India Register a Dominant Victory

The slow over-rate penalty came on a disappointing day for Pakistan, as India produced a commanding all-round performance to begin their latest Women’s T20 World Cup campaign.

After posting a competitive total of 170 runs, India bowled out Pakistan for just 106, securing a comprehensive 64-run victory in front of a packed crowd at Edgbaston.

The match attracted 18,814 spectators, making it the highest attendance ever recorded for a Women’s T20 World Cup group-stage fixture.

Deepti Sharma Shines With Five-Wicket Haul

India’s star performer was all-rounder Deepti Sharma, who delivered a brilliant bowling display and finished with five wickets. She played a key role in breaking Pakistan’s batting line-up and ensured India remained in complete control throughout the chase.

Pakistan’s innings started on a difficult note as Sharma struck early, removing key batters. Opener Muneeba Ali tried to steady the innings and scored 41 runs, but she was run out after a sharp direct hit from Sharma, ending Pakistan’s best hope of a comeback.

Soon after, captain Fatima Sana was dismissed with the score at 77 for five, and Pakistan’s lower order failed to recover.

Sharma wrapped up the innings with a late burst, claiming the final three wickets in just five deliveries. Her remarkable spell helped her become the leading wicket-taker in women’s T20 internationals, taking her tally to 166 wickets. Young spinner Shree Charani also impressed, providing strong support with three wickets.

A Tough Start for Pakistan’s Campaign

The defeat and the ICC penalty have made it a challenging start to Pakistan’s Women’s T20 World Cup journey. While the over-rate fine is relatively minor, it reflects the importance the ICC places on maintaining the pace of play during international matches.

Pakistan will now look to put both the defeat and the disciplinary issue behind them as they prepare for their upcoming group-stage fixtures. Meanwhile, India will take confidence from a dominant opening performance as they continue their quest to win their first Women’s T20 World Cup title.
