With several public holidays clustered in April, families are checking academic calendars closely this year. A key concern is whether schools and colleges will open on 14 April, when many parts of India observe Ambedkar Jayanti as an official holiday in memory of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.

Schools in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and other Indian states are set to close on April 14th for Ambedkar Jayanti, marking the 135th birth anniversary of the Constitution’s architect, amidst a series of holidays for various regional festivals throughout April.

Academic schedules indicate that institutions in several states are expected to close on 14 April. Government and private schools and colleges in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have listed Ambedkar Jayanti as a public holiday. Schools in Delhi are also likely to remain shut, following official notifications.

Ambedkar Jayanti school holiday and its significance

This year marks the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar, regarded as chief architect of the Indian Constitution. The day usually features floral tributes, cultural events, and programmes centred on social justice and equality. Many educational institutions hold assemblies, debates, and essay contests that explore Ambedkar’s work in law, education, and social reform.

After Ambedkar Jayanti, many regions see continued school breaks due to local festivals. Mid‑April brings Tamil New Year, Vishu, Pohela Boishakh, and Bohag Bihu, which prompt closures in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Assam. Exact holidays differ by state policies and board guidelines, so schedules may not be identical everywhere.

Later in April, more regional observances may affect classroom timetables, including Basava Jayanti, Garia Puja, Akshaya Tritiya, and Parashurama Jayanti. The holiday spell then stretches into early May, when May Day on 1 May is widely marked across India, often with school closures depending on local government notifications.

Because holidays can vary across boards and districts, administrators advise families to rely on official school calendars and circulars for final confirmation. Parents and students planning travel or coaching classes around 14 April and later festivals are therefore checking notices carefully to match their arrangements with confirmed holiday dates.
