Many bank customers across India are unsure whether banks are open or closed on May 1, 2026. Since Labour Day falls on a Friday this year, the confusion has increased, especially for those planning to visit bank branches.

Bank closures on May 1, 2026, vary across India as Labour Day observation differs regionally; many branches in cities like Mumbai and New Delhi will be shut, while banks in locations such as Ahmedabad remain operational based on the RBI holiday calendar.

The answer is not the same for all cities. Bank operations on this day depend on regional holidays listed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Labour Day 2026: Why the Confusion?

Labour Day, celebrated every year on May 1, honours workers and their contributions. In India, the day also coincides with other important observances like Maharashtra Day and Buddha Purnima in certain regions.

Because these holidays are not uniformly observed across all states, bank closures vary from city to city. This is why some branches remain closed while others continue to function normally.

Where Banks Are Closed on May 1

According to the RBI holiday calendar, banks are closed in several major cities on May 1, 2026. These include Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Patna, and many others.

In total, bank branches in around 27 cities are shut due to Labour Day and related regional holidays.

Where Banks Remain Open

At the same time, banks are open in certain cities where May 1 is not observed as a banking holiday. Cities like Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kohima, and Shillong continue normal operations.

This difference highlights the importance of checking local holiday lists before planning a bank visit.

How RBI Decides Bank Holidays

The Reserve Bank of India prepares a yearly holiday calendar that includes both national and state-specific holidays. These holidays fall under categories such as those covered by the Negotiable Instruments Act.

This means bank holidays can vary depending on local festivals, cultural events, and state observances.

Other Bank Holidays in May 2026

Apart from Labour Day, banks will remain closed on several other days in May. These include public holidays like Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti, Sikkim State Day, and Eid al-Adha (Bakrid), along with regular closures on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays.

In total, banks will be closed for multiple days during the month, making it important for customers to plan their visits carefully.

Banking Services Still Available

Even when bank branches are closed, customers can continue to use digital banking services. Online banking, mobile apps, UPI payments, and ATMs remain operational during holidays.

This ensures that essential transactions can still be completed without visiting a branch.
Bank closures on May 1, 2026, depend on the city you are in. While many regions observe Labour Day as a holiday, others do not, leading to mixed operations across the country.
To avoid inconvenience, customers should always check the RBI holiday calendar or confirm with their local branch before planning any banking work.
