Key financial services across India are set for a mid-week pause as Bakrid, also called Eid al-Adha or Eid-ul-Zuha, brings a stock market holiday on 28 May 2026 and staggered bank closures on 27 and 28 May in different cities, altering normal trading and banking schedules.

The holiday pattern is not uniform because Bakrid is observed on separate days in several states, guided by local moon sightings. As a result, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday list shows banks closed on 27 May in some centres and on 28 May in others, while stock exchanges follow 28 May.

Bakrid (Eid al-Adha) will cause staggered bank holidays on May 27 and May 28, 2026, across India, with nationwide stock exchanges NSE and BSE closed on May 28, affecting financial services.

Bakrid bank holiday for NSE, BSE and market segments

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will shut all trading on Thursday, 28 May 2026, for Bakrid. This closure shortens the trading week and halts activity in equity, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, securities lending and borrowing, and electronic gold receipts for the entire day.

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also observe the Bakrid bank holiday on 28 May but only for the morning session. Commodity contracts on MCX are scheduled to restart in the evening segment, allowing participants some opportunity to manage positions after the daytime suspension.

Bakrid bank holiday for banks on 27 May

According to the RBI calendar, several banking hubs will close branches on Wednesday, 27 May, for Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakri Eid or Id-ul-Zuha. Services will not operate in Agartala, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Guwahati, Imphal, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, Srinagar and Thiruvananthapuram.

Date Type of holiday Cities affected
27 May 2026 Bakrid bank holiday for banks Agartala, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Guwahati, Imphal, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram
28 May 2026 Bakrid bank holiday for banks and markets Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, Shillong, Srinagar, Vijayawada; NSE, BSE nationwide; MCX morning session

A different group of locations will observe the Bakrid bank holiday on Thursday, 28 May. Banking operations will remain closed in Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, Shillong, Srinagar and Vijayawada, matching the nationwide market shutdown on that date.

Bakrid bank holiday and the religious significance of Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha is one of the main Islamic festivals worldwide and highlights sacrifice, dedication and charity. It remembers Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to follow God’s command. Islamic belief says Ibrahim dreamt of sacrificing Ismail, but God replaced Ismail with a ram, viewed as a sign of mercy and steadfast devotion.

The festival occurs on the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah, the final month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Because this calendar follows moon phases, the sighting may differ between regions, and the Bakrid bank holiday therefore falls on varying dates across India, explaining the split between 27 and 28 May.

The combination of staggered Bakrid bank holiday dates for banks, a full-day break at NSE and BSE on 28 May 2026, and a partial halt at MCX means customers, traders and businesses need to note which services will operate in their city on each day, based on the official RBI and exchange schedules.
