Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Sunday that civil defence work now goes beyond wartime duties. Yogi Adityanath said civil defence personnel are also vital for disaster relief. Yogi Adityanath linked the role to quick action during emergencies. The remarks came during a review of the civil defence department’s work, an official statement said.

During the meeting, Yogi Adityanath asked officials to upgrade volunteer skills for present-day needs. Yogi Adityanath also said more people should join civil defence and disaster duties. Yogi Adityanath stressed stronger readiness for rescue, relief, and emergency response. The official statement said the focus included safer public response and better coordination.
Civil defence disaster management training and volunteers
Yogi Adityanath directed that volunteers should be trained for relief and rescue tasks. The statement said these tasks include firefighting, first-aid, and search operations. It also includes disaster management and evacuation exercises. Yogi Adityanath said training should match modern requirements. Yogi Adityanath also asked officials to include retired Army personnel in training programmes.
Yogi Adityanath said student groups can support civil defence training during vacations. Yogi Adityanath said schools and colleges are currently on vacation. Yogi Adityanath asked that volunteers from the National Cadet Corps NCC be involved. Yogi Adityanath also mentioned the National Service Scheme NSS. Similar organisations were also suggested for civil defence training.
Civil defence disaster management planning and mock drills
Reviewing the action plan, Yogi Adityanath asked for civil defence plans in newly-covered districts. Yogi Adityanath said these plans should be completed at the earliest. Yogi Adityanath also ordered volunteer recruitment to finish as required. Yogi Adityanath said, “Newly-recruited volunteers should be provided modern training and essential equipment to deal with various types of disasters.\”
Yogi Adityanath ordered large-scale mock drills in every civil defence district. Yogi Adityanath said drills should involve all stakeholders. Yogi Adityanath set the frequency at least twice a year. The statement said these exercises support preparedness and response. It also reflects the department’s current role in evacuation and emergency practice.
Civil defence disaster management history and public awareness
According to the statement, the civil defence wing began in 1962 after the Indo-China War. The statement said later legal changes expanded its responsibilities. It said an amendment to the Civil Defence Act in 2009 assigned disaster preparedness. It also assigned response duties. The department now works on mitigation, rescue, and other emergency services.
Yogi Adityanath praised awareness and training efforts by the department, the statement said. Yogi Adityanath said, \”An informed and well-trained society is essential for effective response during disasters.\” Yogi Adityanath also stressed CPR and first-aid training for volunteers. Yogi Adityanath highlighted using sirens to warn citizens before disasters.
Yogi Adityanath said the civil defence department should become a stronger modern institution. Yogi Adityanath linked this goal to public safety and disaster management, the statement said. The directions covered training, staffing, equipment, and district plans. The plan also included mock drills and public alerts. The official statement said the aim is faster help during emergencies.
