In Delhi’s Lodhi Colony, the family of an 28-year-old newlywed woman has made serious claims of dowry harassment and physical abuse after her marriage, leading to her mysterious death. Police are now conducting an investigation and are looking into all angles, including suicide, murder and more. The accusations brought by the family are being verified by the officials, they said.

Delhi NewlyWed Murder Case

In Delhi, a 28-year-old newlywed woman died after being found critically injured; her family alleges dowry harassment and abuse by her husband and in-laws, while police investigate the death, considering suicide, murder, and accident theories pending a post-mortem report.

Woman Found Critically Injured Outside NDMC Residential Complex

The woman was discovered in a “critically injured condition” outside the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) residential flats at Palika Kunj on Saturday evening. She was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where the doctors pronounced her dead.

Investigators say preliminary evidence indicates that she slipped from the third floor of one of the buildings in the government housing complex. But police has yet to figure out how she got to the premises or what exactly prompted the incident.

They said the woman was married on April 24, 2026, to a sales executive in Chhattarpur who was 30 years old at the time. Her maternal family resides in Sangam Vihar whereas her husband’s family resides in Pushp Vihar.

Police are looking at CCTV footage of the area and interviewing passersby to work out how she moved around before she died. They found that she had told her mother around 6pm that she was going to her husband’s house, but the place of her arrest is almost 9-10kms away from Pushp Vihar, adding to the doubts.

Family Alleges Dowry Demands And Physical Abuse

Her husband and in-laws have been accused by the relatives of the deceased woman of harassing her for dowry despite marriage being a love marriage.

Her uncle said that the family had allegedly asked for a car and ₹10 lakh after the wedding, but went ahead and pressurised her even after knowing that her family was financially weak.

“He (the husband) would beat her and harass her for dowry. We cannot believe she took her own life. Either she was murdered, or she was driven to this by the constant mental torture,” her uncle said.

The family has requested police to register a case against the husband and his family, saying they feel that the harassment may have been to the extent that it led to her death.

Salary Dispute Allegedly Led To Frequent Arguments

Family members also claimed that the woman had been supporting her mother financially ever since her father’s death five years ago, as she was the family’s sole breadwinner.

Her husband’s relatives say he originally didn’t want her to keep working after she got married. They claimed that later, he demanded she give him all of her salary. The woman reportedly wanted to keep sending ₹5,000 monthly to her mother, leading to conflicts between the couple.

Her uncle also said that the couple had a big fight about the matter one day prior to her passing.

“I regret that when she told us about the harassment, we asked her to adjust and return to her husband. We wish we had brought her back,” he said.

Police Await Postmortem Report As Investigation Continues

The woman’s younger brother has also said he suspects she didn’t commit suicide because he doesn’t think she would go to such lengths. He has called for severe punishment for her husband and in-laws.

The husband has not made any public comments on the allegations.

The exact cause of the death will be known only after the post mortem examination and an investigation, police said and are looking into all the claims made by the family. It’s not yet clear if the death was accidental, suicidal or by foul play.
