Tensions between Israel and Spain have intensified after a controversial incident in a Spanish town sparked strong reactions from Israeli authorities.

Following the burning of a Benjamin Netanyahu effigy in El Burgo, Spain, during a local Judas tradition, Israel summoned Spain’s diplomat, alleging antisemitism, which Spain refuted as unfounded and emphasized as a cultural custom.

The issue has further strained already fragile diplomatic ties between the two nations.

What Happened in Spain?

The controversy began in the town of El Burgo, near Malaga in southern Spain. During a traditional Easter celebration, locals burned a large effigy of Benjamin Netanyahu.

The figure was reportedly 23 feet tall and packed with around 14 kilograms of gunpowder, making the display dramatic and highly visible. The event took place as part of a long-standing local custom known as the “Burning of Judas,” where symbolic figures are set on fire.

According to the town’s mayor, Maria Dolores Narvaez, similar effigies of global leaders have been used in past years, including figures representing international political personalities.

The appalling antisemitic hatred on display here is a direct result of @sanchezcastejon government’s systemic incitement.

Israel’s Strong Reaction

Israel responded sharply to the incident and summoned Spain’s top diplomat in Tel Aviv for an official reprimand.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry described the act as deeply offensive and linked it to antisemitism. In a public statement, Israel accused the Spanish government of encouraging a hostile environment through its criticism of Israel’s actions in recent conflicts.

Israeli officials also pointed to a video circulating online that showed people cheering as the effigy was burned, which further fueled outrage.

Spain Rejects Allegations

In response, Spain firmly denied the accusations.

A spokesperson from the Spanish Foreign Ministry stated that the government is committed to fighting antisemitism and all forms of hate or discrimination. Officials rejected Israel’s claims, calling them unfounded and misleading.

Spain maintained that the event was part of a local tradition and not intended to promote hatred.

Growing Diplomatic Rift

Relations between Israel and Spain have been worsening over the past few years. The situation has become more tense due to disagreements over conflicts in Gaza and broader Middle East issues.

Spain has been openly critical of Israel’s military actions, which has led to a series of diplomatic steps on both sides:

  • Spain recently withdrew its ambassador from Israel
  • Israel had earlier recalled its ambassador from Spain
  • Spain’s embassy in Tel Aviv is now led by a lower-ranking official
  • Israel has also limited Spain’s role in certain coordination efforts related to Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that countries taking strong diplomatic positions against Israel could face consequences.

A Tradition Turns Political

The “Burning of Judas” ceremony has been practiced in parts of Spain for decades. It usually involves burning symbolic figures representing betrayal or wrongdoing.

However, the use of a real-world political leader in this tradition has raised questions about whether such events are crossing the line between cultural expression and political messaging.

This latest incident shows how local traditions can quickly take on international significance, especially during times of political tension.

With both countries standing firm on their positions, relations between Israel and Spain are likely to remain strained in the near future.

The incident highlights how sensitive global politics has become, where even cultural events can trigger diplomatic disputes. It also reflects the broader divisions over ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

As tensions continue, both nations may need to engage in dialogue to prevent further escalation and restore some level of diplomatic balance.
