Thousands of job aspirants, protesting alleged irregularities in various recruitment examinations in Jharkhand, began their march to the State Assembly on Monday.
In view of the march, security has been tightened outside the State Assembly in Ranchi. Police and students had a face off, with security personnel attempting to stop the protesters near the old Assembly building, PTI reported.
Job aspirants in Jharkhand marched towards the State Assembly in Ranchi on Monday, protesting alleged recruitment exam irregularities and demanding a CBI probe and exam cancellations, facing tightened security as talks failed.
Student protester Devendra Nath Mahato, who has been on hunger strike, told the reporters, “Today is a day of revolution and change for us. For those who have been on hunger strike for the past few days, today is a decisive day in this struggle.”
The Jharkhand Police has imposed prohibitory orders around the assembly premises and made elaborate security arrangements across the city.”In view of the possibility of unrest during the students’ proposed march to the state assembly, the police administration has been put on alert,” PTI quoted ADG (Headquarters) Manoj Kaushik said as stating.
He has urged the students to conduct the march in a “peaceful and disciplined” manner as they have shown their discipline in the ongoing protest here for over two weeks, he said. “It is their responsibility to ensure that anti-social elements and troublemakers are prevented from joining the march,” the ADG said.
This development comes weeks after thousands of students marched to Parliament in New Delhi during the Cockroach Janta Party’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest on July 20. Bowing down the demands of the students, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan submitted his resignation.
The protests have entered the 17th day.

A youth participating in Vidhan Sabha gherao march, said, “Of all the demands made, the government is not talking on two: cancellation of JSSC-CGL exam and the CBI probe into 11th-13th JPSC; this should be cancelled too or stayed until the investigation completes. The government doesn’t intend to do it, it seems. They must have sold it at good price.”
Another protester claimed that students were stopped several times and a strict checking was being done. He said, “Even bikes were being checked strictly so that students could no reach here. We won’t leave here until a CBI inquiry is ordered.”
The protesters had several rounds of talks with the government but the deadlock has continued.
Another protester claimed that the authorities have noted down the number of his four-wheeler. He questioned, “Are we terrorists? Do we not belong to this state? Who are we? State government is acting distant with us. Chief Minister Hemant Soren will have to answer.”
Students have been staging protests at Ranchi’s Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium for more than two weeks, alleging irregularities in the state’s recruitment examinations. The government has held three rounds of talks with the protesters, but the discussions have failed to resolve the deadlock.
