Kara, starring Dhanush, has managed a respectable start at the box office despite the unusual challenge of election-day distractions across Tamil Nadu. Released on Thursday, the film entered cinemas at a time when voter turnout and political activity dominated public attention, inevitably affecting footfall in theatres.
Early trends suggest that the film opened to fairly positive reviews, which has helped generate initial curiosity among audiences. However, occupancy during the crucial morning and afternoon shows remained under the 50 per cent mark in several centres.
Released amidst Tamil Nadu election day distractions, Dhanush’s film ‘Kara’ faced subdued theatre occupancy but showed strong online bookings; trade estimates ₹6-7 crore opening day collection, with the upcoming May 1 weekend anticipated to boost performance.

Despite the subdued start in physical theatres, online ticketing platforms indicate a more encouraging picture. Advance bookings and ticket sales through BookMyShow have reportedly been strong, signalling steady audience interest. This suggests that while walk-in crowds were limited initially, the film could witness improved occupancy in the coming days.
The timing of the release may ultimately work in the film’s favour. With the May 1 long weekend approaching, exhibitors are optimistic about a significant jump in collections. Extended holidays often drive family outings and group viewings, which could provide the much-needed boost for the film’s box office performance.
Directed by Vignesh Raja, Kara features a strong supporting cast including K. S. Ravikumar, Karunas, Jayaram, Prithvi Rajan, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Sreeja Ravi. The film’s technical team also adds to its appeal, with music composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, cinematography handled by Theni Eswar and editing by Sreejith Sarang.
Trade estimates predict that Kara is likely to collect around Rs 6-7 crore on its opening day. While not an explosive start, the figure is considered decent given the circumstances. The real test for the film will be its performance over the weekend, where positive word-of-mouth and holiday advantage could help it gain momentum.
Overall, Kara has laid a stable foundation at the box office, and its trajectory in the next few days will determine whether it can convert this steady opening into a strong theatrical run.
