Global oil prices declined in early trading after the United States and Iran signed an interim peace agreement aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

According to Reuters, Brent crude futures fell 89 cents, or 1.12%, to $78.66 a barrel in early trade, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped 98 cents, or 1.28%, to $75.81 a barrel.

US President Trump and Iranian President Pezeshkian signed an interim peace agreement in France, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming Iranian oil exports, causing global oil prices to decline amid eased Middle East tensions.

The decline came as markets reacted positively to signs of easing tensions in the Middle East, a region that plays a crucial role in global energy supplies.

Oil Prices Drop As US-Iran Peace Deal Reopens A Vital Global Trade Route

Trump, Pezeshkian Sign Agreement In France

US President Donald Trump signed the agreement at the Palace of Versailles in France following a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

“It’s signed,” Trump told reporters after the ceremony.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also signed the document, according to photographs released by Iranian state media, marking a significant step toward ending the conflict between the two countries.

The memorandum of understanding contains several key provisions designed to reduce regional tensions and restore economic activity.

Under the agreement:

The US will issue waivers allowing Iran to resume oil exports.
The Strait of Hormuz will be reopened for international shipping.
Iran commits that it will “not procure or develop nuclear weapons.”
A proposed $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran will be developed in the next phase of negotiations.
The agreement seeks to end military hostilities across multiple fronts in the region.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is particularly significant for energy markets. The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, carrying a substantial share of global crude exports.

Impact Beyond Iran

The agreement’s scope extends beyond US-Iran relations.

According to the text, the deal aims to end the conflict on all fronts, including Lebanon, where Israel has continued military operations in recent months.

Analysts say the broader regional implications of the agreement could help reduce geopolitical risks that have weighed heavily on global markets.

A Historic Venue With A Complex Legacy

The signing ceremony also drew attention because of its location.

Trump signed the agreement at the Palace of Versailles, the same venue where former US President Woodrow Wilson signed the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, formally ending World War I.

The treaty, signed by the United States, France, Britain and other Allied powers, remains one of the most consequential agreements in modern history. Historians have long debated its legacy, with some arguing that its terms contributed to political instability in Germany and helped create conditions that eventually led to the rise of Adolf Hitler and World War II.

More than a century later, Versailles once again became the backdrop for a major international agreement, this time focused on ending conflict in the Middle East and restoring stability to one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
