In one of the greatest losses in the cricket world – Sir Garfield Sobers passes away at the age of 89. He was known as one of the greatest all rounders in the history of the game. The legend was a West Indies cricketer who left behind a remarkable legacy that changed international cricket.
Legendary West Indies all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers passed away aged 89 in Barbados. A prolific cricketer from 1954-1974, he scored 8,032 Test runs, took 6/73 vs Australia, captained the West Indies, and was the first player to hit six sixes in an over.
A Career That Defined Greatness
Sir Garfield Sobers was born in Barbados. He began his cricket journey at a very young age and made his first class debut when he was just 16 years old and he earned his Test cap when he was 18. His career spanning two decades – 1954 to 1974, Sobers played 93 Test Matches and one One-Day International.

Informing that during his test he scored – 8,032 runs at an imptressive average of 57.78, making him one of the most successful player of his time.
Noting one of Sobers memorable accomplishments in 1958, when he scored 365 runs against Pakistan. It was his first test century and he made it the highest individual score in Test Cricket.
It was a record till 36 years and his fellow West Indian Brian Lara surpassed it with 375 runs in 1994. Sobers’ 365 remains the highest score ever made as a player’s first Test century.

More Than Just a Brilliant Batter
His fans must know one of his interesting fact, that Sobers was a left arm bowler and was capable of delivering fast- medium pace, left- arm orthodox spin and wrist spin that made him one of the most versatile players in cricket history.
His best Test bowling figures came against Australia when he claimed 6 wickets for 73 runs. Sobers also set high standards in the field with his athleticism and safe catching, completing the image of a complete cricketer.
Successful Captain of the West Indies
It was after Sir Frank Worrell’s retirement, Sobers took over as the captain of the West Indies. He headed the team in 39 Test Matches in both balling and batting that helped to strengthen the team on the international ground.
First Cricketer to Hit Six Sixes in an Over
Not just internationally, Sobers also contributed his best performances in domestic cricket. In 1968- playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan, Sobers became the 1st player to hit six sixes in a single over. His dedication and contribution to the cricket industry will never be forgotten and will always be remembered to seek perseverance.
