Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Marie Wilson has presented the first state budget of the TVK government on Wednesday.
The budget comes at a time when the state’s debt burden has nearly doubled in five years, while a structural revenue deficit leaves little room for new spending.
On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Marie Wilson will present the TVK government’s inaugural budget. The state faces significant financial challenges, with liabilities around ₹13.18 lakh crore and a funding gap, impacting new spending and poll promises.
The TVK government’s White Paper on public finances released in June 2026 states that the Tamil Nadu’s total liabilities stands at around ₹13.18 lakh crore when off‑budget borrowings, guarantees and contingent liabilities are included.
The direct debt alone is close to ₹10 lakh crore, up from roughly ₹4.8-5.1 lakh crore in 2021.
Even before launching any major new welfare schemes, estimates point to a funding gap of about ₹11,600 crore for 2026-27, given existing commitments and borrowing limits, according to a report in The New Indian Express.
The state’s realistic borrowing capacity under central norms and power‑sector reform conditions is around ₹1.52 lakh crore, which is insufficient to meet all committed obligations, leaving minimal space for new programmes.
This impacts the TVK’s ability to implement its poll promises (such as financial assistance for women and youth, subsidised gas, gold schemes, crop loan waivers) without raising Raising additional revenue and undertaking expenditure reforms.
Who Is Marie Wilson?
Wilson’s entry into politics came after an extensive career in educational administration. Since January 2011, he had been serving as the managing director of Jeppiaar Institute of Technology in Sriperumbudur, Kanchipuram district, while also functioning as the managing trustee of the Jeppiaar Remibai Educational Trust.
Wilson was the founder-director of Jeppiaar Engineering College from 2001 to 2010 and headed Jeppiaar International School in the same capacity between 2003 and 2010. He also served as Director of JIT Global Infosystems Pvt. Ltd and founder-director of JIT Sports Academy.
Wilson joined TVK alongside a group of prominent figures that included former IRS officer K.G. Arunraj, former judicial officer C. Subash, and former MLAs R. Rajalakshmi, S. David Selvan and Dr. A. Sridharan.
This is the Jeppiaar family’s first direct participation in electoral politics since Col. Dr. Jeppiaar’s unsuccessful contest from T. Nagar in the 1989 Tamil Nadu Assembly election from the AIADMK ticket (Janaki faction).
On the other hand, he has been embroiled in several controversies and legal issues.
In 2022, a case was filed against him in Puducherry where he was accused of beating up his brother and sister-in-law in Puducherry over a bitter family property and business dispute. A purported video went viral in connection with the incident.
Another case came into light during the 2026 election campaign after a local Chennai trader and businessman, Vignesh Ram, filed a formal police complaint accusing Wilson of cheating him out of approximately ₹1.10 crore, The Hindu reported.
The trader claimed he supplied wholesale groceries on credit to a private educational institution managed by Wilson between 2017 and 2019. According to the complaint, Wilson defaulted on the payments, and when the trader tried to collect the debt, the TVK leader and his associates allegedly blocked his access, used abusive language, and subjected him to criminal intimidation and wrongful restraint.
According to his election affidavit, he faces several criminal cases, including charges of attempt to commit culpable homicide (IPC Section 308) and voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons (IPC Section 324).
