Amid rising concerns over maritime security, Iran has firmly denied reports claiming it is charging toll fees from Indian oil tankers passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Iran denies reports alleging it charges toll fees on Indian oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, calling the claims baseless disinformation and reaffirming free and safe passage for all vessels through the critical global oil route.

The Iranian government described these claims as “baseless and fabricated,” rejecting any suggestion of restrictions on shipping.

Iran Calls Reports ‘Disinformation’

In an official statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said that no such policy exists and that all vessels, including those from India, continue to enjoy free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The spokesperson added that such allegations appear to be part of a deliberate attempt to create unnecessary tensions in the region and harm the long-standing relationship between Iran and India.

Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most critical maritime routes in the world. Nearly 20% of global oil supply passes through this narrow waterway every day.

Because of its importance, even minor disruptions or rumours related to the strait can have a direct impact on global energy markets and oil prices.

Concerns Raised by Shipping Industry

Earlier, some sources in the Indian shipping industry had raised concerns after unverified reports suggested that Iran might be attempting to levy tolls on certain foreign tankers.

However, there has been no official confirmation from the Indian government or major shipping companies regarding such claims.

Iran Assures Safe Navigation

Iran has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the safety and security of international shipping in the region. Officials stressed that the country continues to follow international maritime norms and ensure smooth passage for all vessels.

The government also accused “hostile elements” of spreading misinformation to destabilise the region.

Impact on Global Markets

The situation is being closely monitored by global energy markets. Any disruption or uncertainty in the Strait of Hormuz can affect oil supply chains and lead to price fluctuations worldwide.

For countries like India, which rely heavily on energy imports, stability in this region remains crucial.

Focus on Stability and Cooperation

Iran emphasised that it remains committed to working with regional and global partners, including India, to maintain peace and stability in the vital maritime corridor.

While tensions in the region continue to draw attention, Iran’s latest statement aims to reassure stakeholders that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains unaffected for now.
