US President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday for what officials describe as a “high-stakes” summit on trade, technology and security. The meeting came as China-US tensions remain sharp, and Beijing warned Washington against crossing key limits in China-US relations.

The leaders will have talks at the Great Hall of the People after a formal welcome ceremony. Trump and Xi shook hands before starting discussions expected to cover tariffs, global supply chains, economic cooperation and wider geopolitical issues involving both Washington and Beijing.

US President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday for talks on trade, technology, and security amid heightened tensions, with China outlining ‘four red lines’ regarding Taiwan, human rights, political systems, and development rights.

Trump Xi Summit Shapes China-us Relations And Trade

In his introductory remarks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Trump said, “It’s an honor to be with you, it’s an honor to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the U.S.A. is going to be better than ever before. Thank you very much!”

Trump emphasized the strength of his personal bond with President Xi, noting that their direct line of communication was key to resolving bilateral friction.

“You and I have known each other for a long time-arguably the longest-standing relationship between leaders of our two nations,” Trump remarked. He characterized their rapport as “fantastic,” explaining that whenever difficulties surfaced, they handled them privately and efficiently. “I would call you, you would call me, and we worked things out very quickly, even if the public didn’t realize it,” he noted.

Offering high praise for Xi’s governance, Trump added, “I have such respect for China and the job you’ve done. You’re a great leader, and I tell that to everyone.”

The President also highlighted the high-level business delegation accompanying him, signaling a strong desire for deepened economic ties. “We have brought the world’s most successful business leaders with us-they are the best at what they do, and they are eager to engage,” he said.

Framing the encounter as a landmark event, Trump observed that the summit was garnering unprecedented domestic attention. “Some are calling this the most significant summit in history; people can’t remember anything quite like it,” he stated. Closing his remarks on an optimistic note, he told Xi, “It is an honor to be your friend. The relationship between China and the U.S. is going to be stronger than ever before.”

China-US relations and Beijing’s stated ‘four red lines’

Before Trump’s arrival for the two-day visit from May 13 to 15, China’s Embassy in the United States restated Beijing’s stance on sensitive topics in China-US relations. The Embassy said some subjects are treated as “four red lines” that should not be tested during Trump’s stay in China.

In a post on X, the Embassy declared, “The four red lines in China-US relations must not be challenged.” An attached image detailed the four areas labelled as red lines: the Taiwan question, democracy and human rights, paths and political systems, and China’s development right within China-US relations.

Trump was welcomed with a ceremonial guard of honour from the People’s Liberation Army Honour Guard Battalion. Xi then greeted Trump at the Great Hall, where both leaders exchanged a brief handshake. Trump next met members of Xi’s cabinet before introducing the US delegation.

During the introductions, Trump introduced key US officials to Xi, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. A state banquet in Trump’s honour is planned for later in the evening, following the day’s official China-US relations talks and meetings.

Trump reached China on Wednesday as part of the latest high-stakes engagement between the two countries. On arrival, Trump was received by China’s Vice President Han Zheng, while US Ambassador to China David Perdue was also present to greet the visiting President.

This trip is the first state visit to China by a US President since Trump’s visit in 2017. The two Presidents have met each other in person since their Busan meeting last October, and the Beijing talks are expected to build on those earlier China-US relations discussions.
