These are two of the amazing rescue stories involving the survival of an elderly Nepali lady and the Chinese citizen who was rescued 11 days after floods and landslides hit Nepal on August 26.

Following Nepal’s August 26 floods, rescuers saved 64-year-old Chandika Shrestha and a Chinese national after 11 days, offering hope amid tragedy, while the UN seeks $50 million for 84,000 flood victims’ relief.

The rescue of the two individuals gave a glimmer of hope in a tragedy which has resulted in the loss of many lives due to the massive destruction in the flooded regions.

While the Nepalese lady was rescued from under the debris of her house in Vetravati, Nuwakot, the Chinese citizen was saved from the tunnel at the flooded Upper Trishuli-1 hydroelectric power plant site.

The first big rescue was that of Chandika Shrestha, a 64-year-old from Vetravati in Nuwakot.

It has been revealed by the Armed Police Force of Nepal that she was rescued alive from under the debris of the house where she had been trapped for eleven days due to the disastrous floods.

She was successfully rescued from the fourth floor of her house.
Her rescue is a source of great hope during the ongoing search of the missing individuals after the disaster.

After the rescue, Shrestha was on her way to Kathmandu via a helicopter.

Chinese National Rescued From Hydropower Tunnel

In another dramatic operation on Saturday, rescuers pulled a Chinese national alive from the Edit-4 tunnel of the flood-affected Upper Trishuli-1, a 216 MW hydropower project.
According to Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Office, disaster experts from the Nepal Army and South Korea were involved in the rescue.

The man had remained trapped inside the tunnel since the floods hit the region.
After being brought out safely on the 11th day, he was taken towards Maithili Barracks at Trishuli in Nuwakot for medical treatment.

The rescue highlighted the difficult conditions faced by disaster response teams working in areas heavily damaged by floods and landslides.

Two Rescues Bring Hope Amid Nepal’s Flood Disaster

The successful rescue missions took place as search teams were still looking for survivors in Nepal. The floods and landslides resulting from the tragedy have impacted vast swathes of land located in the river basins of Bhotekoshi and Trishuli.
It has become rather tough to find out any survivors as many places have become inaccessible due to the disaster.

The survival of Shrestha after 11 days has provided a ray of hope for finding out other survivors too.

UN Seeks $50 Million for Flood-Hit Communities

As rescue operations continue, the humanitarian response is also expanding.
The United Nations and its humanitarian partners have appealed for nearly $50 million to provide urgent assistance to around 84,000 people affected by floods and landslides in Nepal.

The appeal focuses on communities affected along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, many of which are located in remote and difficult-to-access areas.

Four-Month Relief Plan Planned Before Winter

According to the UN Office in Nepal, the requested funds will support a four-month emergency response plan prepared by the Nepalese government under the National Disaster Management Authority.

The plan aims to provide essential assistance to affected communities before winter arrives.

The UN and its partner organisations are coordinating their work with the Nepalese government and local rescue and relief agencies.

Shelter, Food and Medical Aid Among Priorities

The humanitarian appeal will focus on providing basic necessities to people who have lost homes, livelihoods and access to essential services.

The planned assistance includes:

  • Emergency shelter
  • Food and cash assistance
  • Clean drinking water
  • Medical and health services
  • Other life-saving supplies

Leila Peters Yahia, the UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal, said reaching people in the most remote and severely affected communities is a key priority.
