A roof collapse at an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area triggered a major rescue operation on Wednesday afternoon, leaving three workers dead and several others injured. Emergency teams, local residents and disaster response personnel rushed to the site as ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

A roof collapse at an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area on Wednesday initiated a major rescue operation for workers potentially trapped under concrete and iron debris, with emergency teams, NDRF, and the Indian Army involved in recovery efforts.

The accident reportedly took place when concrete casting work was underway at the warehouse site. Local accounts suggested that around 50 to 60 workers were present when a section of the structure gave way. Officials later confirmed that five people lost their lives in the collapse, while rescue teams continued searching the debris for any remaining trapped workers.

Rescue teams cut through iron beams at Taratala warehouse site

Residents were among the first to respond after the collapse. They rushed towards the site and tried to pull out those within reach before police, fire brigade personnel and rescue teams arrived. The rescue effort later expanded, with specialised teams using gas cutters to cut through large iron beams blocking access to trapped workers.

A crane was also deployed to remove heavy sections of the collapsed structure. Rescue teams were working carefully because unstable concrete slabs and metal frames could shift during removal. Such operations are often slow, as rescuers must balance speed with the risk of further collapse over people still stuck inside.

Local residents claimed cries for help could be heard from beneath the debris after the accident. That raised hopes that some of the trapped workers could still be reached alive. Ambulances remained stationed near the site, and injured workers were being taken for treatment. Some of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.

Units from the National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Army also joined the rescue effort, according to officials at the scene. Their involvement indicated the scale and complexity of the operation, as the collapsed structure included heavy iron and concrete components that required specialised equipment and trained personnel.

Control room opened as officials monitor rescue operation

The West Bengal disaster management department opened a control room at Nabanna, the state secretariat, to coordinate information related to the accident. The control room numbers shared were 1070, 8697981070, 033 22143526 and 033 22535285. Families of workers and local residents were expected to seek updates through these channels.

Senior officials and public representatives reached the accident site as rescue work continued. Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner-administrator Smita Pandey was among those present to oversee coordination. Political leaders, including Rakesh Singh, Agnimitra Paul and Indranil Khan, also visited the location after information about the collapse spread.

Police were managing crowd control around the site, a crucial part of any rescue operation in a densely built urban area. Large crowds can block ambulances, fire tenders and machinery. Officials were expected to keep the immediate collapse zone restricted until engineers and rescue personnel assessed the stability of the remaining structure.

The immediate priority remained rescue and medical care. A formal inquiry into the cause is likely to follow once the site is secured. Early reports pointed to a collapse during concrete casting, but officials had not issued a final technical finding. Investigators will need to examine whether the temporary supports, design, material quality or worksite supervision failed.

Why under-construction collapses are especially dangerous

Roof collapses at construction sites can be particularly deadly because workers are often directly beneath freshly cast slabs, scaffolding or temporary supports. Wet concrete is heavy, and if shuttering or support systems fail, the load can come down suddenly. Iron reinforcement and beams can then trap workers, making access difficult even for trained rescuers.

Construction labourers are also vulnerable because many work in groups at the same level during casting. If a slab fails, several people can be caught in the same impact zone. Rescue teams must then search through layered debris, which may include concrete, steel rods, shuttering plates, wooden supports and machinery.

In Kolkata, large construction and warehouse projects often operate in busy industrial or mixed-use neighbourhoods where access can be challenging. Taratala, located in the south-western part of the city, has industrial activity, transport movement and dense local traffic. These conditions can complicate the movement of cranes, ambulances and heavy rescue vehicles.

Worker safety at under-construction sites usually depends on several checks before concrete is poured. These include the strength and alignment of staging, proper shuttering, load calculations, supervision by qualified engineers and controlled movement of workers during casting. Any weakness in temporary support systems can become dangerous when concrete load builds up.

Authorities will also have to verify whether all workers at the site were formally recorded. In many construction accidents, identifying the exact number of people present becomes difficult if attendance registers are incomplete or contractors use multiple labour groups. Accurate worker lists are essential for rescue, family notification and compensation procedures.

Authorities confirmed that three workers died in the collapse, while several others sustained injuries. The focus remained on medical treatment for the injured and a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident. The full extent of the incident will become clearer once authorities complete their assessment of the site and account for all workers present during the collapse.
