In just one hour of immense rain, the national capital is disturbed with waterlogging, even the Indira Gandhi International Airport is heavily blocked with several flights being diverted.
Intense rainfall caused severe waterlogging in Delhi, disrupting the Indira Gandhi International Airport and diverting approximately nine flights. India’s Meteorological Department issued a Yellow Alert, warning of potential waterlogging, thunderstorms, lightning, and high winds up to 60 kmph.
In the latest development about nine flights have been diverted in Delhi due bad weather conditions.
Several videos show passengers rolling up their trousers and pushing luggage trolleys through the water as they tried to make their way inside.’

‘I’ve Never Seen Anything Like This’
Passengers at the airport described the situation as difficult as water continued to collect around the gates. Mansi, a passenger, told ANI that she had been waiting for around half an hour for the water level to come down before attempting to reach the arrival gates.
“There is so much water,” she said, describing the situation as something she had not experienced before. Another passenger, Himanshi, also said she had been waiting for the water to recede before moving towards the arrival area.

Visuals from the airport showed passengers navigating the water while trying to keep their luggage and belongings dry.
‘It Happened Two Years Ago Too’
One of the other passengers pointed out that the incident was very similar to an earlier one that had occurred almost two years back.
She pointed out that the intensity of the rainfall seemed higher on this occasion, and that the waterlogging incident occurred during the festival of Krishna Janamashtami.
The presence of rain, holiday traffic, and festivities contributed to the chaos at the airport.

What Did The IMD Say About Delhi Rain?
Weather Warning Issued by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather warning for Delhi and advised people regarding the rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning.
The weather department reported that there would be showers accompanied by thunderstorms at several places during the afternoon and also predicted heavy showers at isolated places.

A period of showers and thunderstorms would occur from 5 pm to 8 pm, while also predicting heavy showers in some places.
There is a possibility of 50-100 mm of rain showers along with thunderstorms and lightning and high speed winds in some places.
High speed winds up to 40-50 kmph with gusts up to 60 kmph would blow.
How Much Rain Did Delhi Receive?
According to the IMD’s three-hourly rainfall data, Palam recorded 3.4 mm of rain between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm.

Najafgarh recorded 0.5 mm between 8:30 am and 11:30 am.
Most other monitoring stations reported little or no rainfall during the corresponding periods.
However, even short periods of intense rain can lead to waterlogging at low-lying locations and areas where drainage capacity is limited.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert
The IMD’s Yellow Alert advised people to remain cautious as rainfall could result in waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas and underpasses.
Traffic movement could also be affected, with possible delays for commuters and public transport users.
