Noted writer and public intellectual S.R. Ramaswamy, a close associate of D.V. Gundappa and former president of Rashtroutthana, died in Bengaluru on 10 April 2026. Ramaswamy was serving as editor of the Kannada monthly Utthana and remained active in literary and public life until recent years.

The body of S.R. Ramaswamy is kept at Keshava Shilpa in Chamarajpet for final viewing until 12 noon on 10 April 2026. Many writers, activists and admirers are expected to pay respects, as Ramaswamy mentored several young talents and shaped important discussions in Kannada intellectual circles.

S.R. Ramaswamy, a prominent Kannada writer, journalist, editor of Utthana, and former Rashtroutthana president, passed away in Bengaluru on April 10, 2026. He authored over fifty books and received numerous awards for his significant contributions to literature, journalism, and public life.

Life and work of SR Ramaswamy in Kannada public sphere

S.R. Ramaswamy’s full name was Sondekoppa Ramachandrashastri Ramaswamy. Born on 29 October 1937, Ramaswamy worked as a Kannada writer, journalist, art critic, environmental thinker and social worker. Ramaswamy introduced many new voices to Kannada literature and believed literature should mirror life and guide society.

Between 1972 and 1979, S.R. Ramaswamy served as chief sub-editor of the Sudha weekly, part of the Prajavani group. Later, Ramaswamy became chief editor of Rashtroutthana Sahitya and the Kannada monthly Utthana. Through these platforms, Ramaswamy encouraged emerging writers and promoted debates on culture, society and national issues.

SR Ramaswamy, Rashtroutthana and Kannada cultural thought

As former president of Rashtroutthana, a body linked to the Sangh Parivar, S.R. Ramaswamy remained involved with its wider activities. Literature, rural development and sustainable environment stayed central to Ramaswamy’s interests. Ramaswamy considered swadeshi ideas close to the heart and supported initiatives that stressed local knowledge and self-reliant communities.

S.R. Ramaswamy maintained close ties with leading Kannada cultural figures such as D.V. Gundappa, V. Seetharamiah, S. Sreekanta Sastri, Rallapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma, Yadava Rao Joshi and P. Kodanda Rao. These relationships placed Ramaswamy at the centre of important literary debates and strengthened links between different generations of Kannada thinkers.

SR Ramaswamy, activism and legal interventions

Ramaswamy combined writing with activism on environmental and social issues. Ramaswamy argued that communities threatened by forest policies should receive secure land rights. Several voluntary rural development projects took guidance from Ramaswamy, who treated grassroots work and public awareness building as essential parts of democratic life.

Community-oriented campaigns, organising struggles at village level and using influence within administration and legislatures were key methods for S.R. Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy also approached courts, including the Supreme Court, filing several cases. These efforts aimed to protect citizens’ rights and ensure that policy decisions considered local interests and ecological concerns.

Awards, honours and major works of SR Ramaswamy

A sharp writing style, measured language, encouragement to youth and commitment to organisation marked S.R. Ramaswamy’s personality. Ramaswamy authored more than fifty books and over two thousand articles. The writings covered literature, culture, nationalism and development, and reached both academic readers and general audiences across Karnataka.

Key awards recognised S.R. Ramaswamy’s work in literature, journalism and public life. Details are listed below.

Award / Honour Year Field / Reason
Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award 1992 Social science work “Shatamanada Tiruvinalli Bharata”
Aryabhata Award 2006 Contribution to journalism
Karnataka Rajyotsava Award 2008 Service to the state
Honorary Doctorate, Karnataka State Open University 2011 Lifetime contribution to literature and journalism
“Nadoja” title, Kannada University 2015 Prestigious honorary degree of the state

Bengaluru’s Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs gained new energy when S.R. Ramaswamy served as honorary secretary. Ramaswamy gave fresh direction to its programmes and helped the institute host talks on public affairs, environment and culture, drawing students, senior citizens and researchers to its lectures and study circles.

The death of S.R. Ramaswamy leaves a gap in Kannada literary, cultural and activist circles. Ramaswamy’s writings, organisational work, court interventions and mentoring of younger writers continue to shape debates on literature, environment, swadeshi and public policy in Karnataka, and remain a reference for scholars and activists.
